Message: My wife thinks that I should get rid of my truck. We have a baby on the way, the truck is almost paid off. I have wanted to keep it as a project car to work on over the next few years. She wants to get a car. Without a truck we can't haul anything. PLan on buying a boat next summer, can't pull a boat with a toyota. Anyway, just looked at KBB, my truck hasn't lost any value since I bought it 4 years ago. I paid $6500 for it, it's worth about $6300 yet! Haven't had any major problems with it. Just routine things! What would you do? Any good arguements? I want to keep my truck

Message: No, I am not getting rid of my wife. My truck is 2 months away from being paid off as well. I was thinking just putting liability on it and just drive it every now and then. I am starting to see the big picture though. I think I might have to get rid of it. It hurts me, but I think it is right.

Message: Advice from an old guy-I got rid of a truck once and bought a brand new 83 Shelby Charger(no kids on the way,we will get to that later)It took about 1 week to realize that the car although it was fun to drive and looked really cool and was fast and got 36 MPG but it couldnt haul anything other than my big a** and unfortunatly I was always hauling stuff around so I ended up buying another truck to have sitting around. Now back to the "baby on the way" part,Children,God love em,almost require that you own a truck from the minute they are born till they move away from home.It starts like this-"honey,we need to fix up a room for the baby"-You need the truck to haul a baby bed and that old chest of drawers that somebody will give you.You need a truck to go to the hardware store to pick up the remodeling supplies and to haul off the junk you tore off the back of the house to add on.I drove my son home from the hospital in my 92 Dakota when he was born 14 years ago and I am now using it to haul his go-kart and other junk around. My daughter has been riding around in the truck since it was new and now that she is 21 years old she sold her car and bought a 94 Dakota because she couldnt haul anything around.Just a couple of weeks back I was using my truck to extract hers from a ditch. When you have kids a truck is a must.If yours is almost paid for thats just a bonus. If you have a girl, forget about that boat your wanting because you wont be able to afford it.Pay off your truck-get the cheapest insurance you can find-buy your wife a car(or minivan)and hang on for your life because kids are a mile a minute fun and very expensive to raise.Another truck aint going to be any cheaper once you figure out you cant live without it.Good luck and Happy parenthood, hemichuck

Message: We had a baby 2 years ago and what Hemichuck has said definitely was true in our case. One of those has been hauling Christmas and birthday presents back from the out of state inlaws in place of having to ship them. But there is always one more piece of furniture out there to haul home...
I also wanted to add--and you never mentioned whether or not you have a CC or QC--but my wife had her doubts about whether or not the carseats would fit in my CC. Well, we have managed just fine with three different car seats on the bench of my CC, and to be honest I feel a lot safer with my daughter in the Dakota than our little Civic.
I will add, finally, that I am a big proponent of being self reliant and doing as much as possible to become independent of other people, especially in case of natural disaster. One example of this was having to evacuate for one of the hurricanes. We are capable of loading up the truck with tons of water and gas and feel pretty confident about our situation.

Message: Thats what I have been trying to tell her. All the furniture and stuff that goes along with kids requires a vehicle to haul all that. She is looking at the short picture. Sell the truck for a down payment on a car. I see the big picture like hemichuck. Gonna need to move stuff! From today until the kid is old enough to buy their own truck! She just won't understand. But on the bright side, my other post about the guy who hit my truck with a cart. If I sue him for the damages and a little more, I can talk her into keeping the truck and using the extra money as a down payment. She makes it sound like we are broke. We make plenty of money to afford a new car.Anyway, I will still be here writing in a couple of years. My dakota isn't going anywhere

Message: You seem to be fighting a one way battle and getting no where. I'm not seeing anywhere that you said HER REASONS for selling the truck. But I bet if she was to sit down and write the reasons for selling it and on another page you write the reasons to keep it she just might see your point. Also tell her to pay attention to traffic when out and about. Trucks are king of the road without question. Maybe she can explain why so many people buy them and the majority are family people.

Brett, do you have a club cab or quad cab? If so, the baby will fit fine in a child seat, forward or backward. I bought my brother's club cab 92 Dak in 2003, we had the baby in 2005 and the truck is used constantly. I kept my 92 Daytona that was paid off in 1994 for everyday use and abuse. But you WILL need the truck to haul furniture, large toys, etc.
The truck is almost paid for. Virtually all vehicles depreciate. If you sell the truck and use the money as a *down payment* (not the full price) for a car, you are buying into at least a few more years of vehicle payments. Having a baby sucks lots of money away. It will likely be a greater financial burden to get rid of the truck and get a car that you have to make payments on (while it depreciates - and cars depreciate faster than trucks). Keep the truck!
