Subject: Heater Core Again! IP: Logged
Message: I have 98 3.9 2wd, November 05 I replace the heater core. Now 1 yr and 2 months later I am getting a slight amount of steam and coolant smell out of my vents. I know heater cores don't go that fast, but I can't think of any thing else that would cause that. I check all hoses I could going into the firewall all appeared to be tight and no leak anywhere visible on the engine. Anybody know what could cause this or what could possibly cause my heater core to go out so quick?

Message: If it is the heater core, go to a professional Radiator shop And get one made. It will be the last one you will install. Same advice goes for the radiator. Just my opinion.

Message: Where did you buy your heater core? And was it new or remanufactured?
There are rumors that Autozone has been selling reman parts as new. I bought a new oil pan there last year for my car, and just one year later, there is some really bad rust bubbling up on the leading edge of it. It's almost rusted through. The original pan had no rust after 14 years.

Message: Well, I read the papers that came with the new heater core I installed.
It said the obvious. Check your coolant and make sure it is the correct mix. Then they said to test the voltage in the coolant. With the vehicle running, place the + lead in the coolant fill, and place the - to a good ground. If you have over x voltage (i dont remember what it said) it indicates a bad ground somewhere. The electricity must accelerate the wear on the heater core or connections.

Message: I for got where it came from, but i pretty sure it is new. I will say i remeber going out of my way to put in an ACDelco core thinking that would definatly be the last time i had to do it.

Message: Either get it premixed, or be sure to use distilled water to mix. Tap water has chemicals in it that accelerate corrosion.

Message: Alos if it has been awhile since you changed your antifreeze it may be time. after awhile the coolant can become corrosive and make pinhole leaks in you radiator or elsewhere like freze plugs or heater cores. This can especially happen if your antifreeze to water ratio is way down.

Message: ACDelco core should be good, I was going to suggest Napa......
Excellent causes mentioned in earlier posts, change & refresh with distilled.
I change mine just about yearly now. Using the distilled cause I am on a well.......
