Message: i have a 2000 dakota 3.9 with a five speed and want to get better gas mileage...would swapping out a rear end out of an automatic make a difference? i heard they had a different ratio geared more towards economy.
thanks

Message: 5-speeds and auto's can have the same
ratio rear end from the factory
check the metal tag if still on the cover, or have a look inside and count the 'teeth' on the gears to calculate the ratio yourself.

Message: you probably have the 3.55: 1 ratio rear gears. the only other ratio (lower numerically) is 3.21:1 and it may not necessarily help your mpg because the engine would have to worker harder than it would with the 3.55's.
here are a few things to help with your mileage.
1) keep the truck in good tune- plugs, wires, cap, O2 sensor, etc....
2) proper tire inflation and front end alignment.
3) switch to synthetic fluids - engine oil, trans & diff fluid.
4) most important - watch your driving habits
good luck, these dak's are heavy and are notorious for not getting great mileage.

Message: I love how people spend hundreds and sometimes thousands of
dollars to save a cent or two per gallon on gas.
