Subject: 45RFE trans filter? IP: Logged
Message: I just ordered a bunch of motor oil, filters, and trans fluid for both of our Dodge vehicles from Amsoil. ($300 Not cheap, but pref customer saves $$$) Nothing like needing to do the first trans FLUSH on TWO Chrysler vehicles at the same time! Both over 40k now.
Amsoil has the trans filter for the Grand Caravan. They LIST the part number for the 45RFE, but don't have a link to it. So I assume Amsoil does not currently supply a filter(s) for the 45RFE?
So, who should I buy these filters from?

Message: I ordered ATP filters through Rock Auto, but they should be readily avaiable from the local NAPA or CarQuest also. When I ordered the trans filter "kit" from Rock Auto I made the mistake of thinking it would have all the filters in it,,, NOT. The kit only had the sump filter and gasket, no spin-on cooler return filter in the kit.
The gasket is nice, no monkeying with RTV and the sealing surfaces don't have to be squeeky clean. A little ATF won't mess up the gasket seal, whereas it would ruin thr RTV seal . Hopefully the gasket comes of easier than the RTV when I have to service the trans next time.

Message: Bulkpart has really good prices, don`t forget to click on "O rings and Gaskets" and get the 1.68 seal if you buy your filters there! I don`t recommend their new fiber gasket(might be alright, last time I ordered from there they had the cork kind),I use Permatex "Right Stuff",works great on trans pans and diff covers.

Message: Yup I saw the part# on Amsoil and what it was. But they don't seem to have it for sale, as there is no link from it like the other stuff they do stock.
I may just try Napa next time I go in there for the filoter kit.
I will make sure it gives both, as mine has the tranny cooler.
I wonder if rockauto would have the timing chain set (has 3 chains) and hydrolic tensioners for the 4.7 V8. Last time I looked around it seemed to be dealer only.
That and the piston rings are the main things holding me back from putting my spare 4.7 back together.

Message: Holy smokes!!! I punched in some things on the rockauto website that I would need to finish assembling my 4.7
$710.00!!! After the discount $675.00
Here is the list, copy and paste.---> http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g57/paysonbadboy/RockAutoPartsList.jpg
Wow. It is times like this that I think I should have stuck with the 318 build up in my 1974 Duster rather than the SOHC 4.7
Being DIFFERENT is going to cost me!

Message: DIFFERENT is good. Even though it's more expensive I like the idea of building out a technically better engine to be a beast. Just don't blow it up and it really won't matter how much you spent: it's all good. :-)

Message: I've used bulkpart.com for the two fluid changes I've done. As mentioned get both filters and the o-ring, and then use some Right-Stuf for the gasket.
Don't forget the big-azz drain pan and the shift kit (as long as you're in there...)

Message: Thank you for contacting AMSOIL with your concerns.
In response to your inquiry, although Wix has assigned this part number (58843), they have not made it available for sale yet.
Thank you again for this opportunity. As always, please feel free to contact us again if we can be of further assistance.

Message: Modain--Technically better doesn't mean it's actually better!
The 4.7 is a great engine, but I don't think it's fair to compare it to an engine designed over 45 years ago and then say it's technically superior! Of course it's technically better! What is it with everyone comparing the 4.7 with the 318!?!?!
GraphiteDak I was wondering, I had thought the 4.7 you got for the Duster was out of a 2000, but in the screenshot you posted it shows it for a 2003 (like your Dakota). I don't think it makes a diffence but I thought I'd just say it.
The thing about my 318 is that I wish it was as easy to change out the cam as it is the 4.7 in terms of disassembly!
