Subject: Interest in Cummins Diesel Dakota??? IP: Logged
Message: I currently own an '02 4x4 Quad Cab Dakota. It's got decent power with the 4.7 V-8 and it hauls my boat, camper, rocks, lumber, dirt, etc. It hauls kids around easily with the back seats. It even fits in my silly 20' deep garage. It looks great. It does NOT get good mileage for a mid size truck (15 mpg tops).
I've heard discussion about putting the newly developed Cummins 4.2L V-6 diesel in the 2010 Durango, and the new 5.6L V-8 diesel in the 2010 Ram 1500. I'm wondering if people would show interest in a next gen Dakota with the 4.2 V-6 Cummins???
Using a Durango, the 4.2 V-6 got a combined 22 mpg and 25 mpg Highway! The engine puts out 270 Hp and a robust 420 ft-lbs of torque. Plus Cummins has an excellent track record and diesel's have extended engine life.
I'd be highly interested in a 4 door Dakota that gets 25 mpg highway, tows like crazy, and maintains it's mid-size agility. I think if they improve the exterior looks in the next gen and combine it with this new engine, they'd have a winner on their hands. It seems all of the competition is copying the mid-size Dakota concept.
The downside to all of this will be increased purchase price and possible overlap with a half-ton diesel Ram. There is some additional noise at idle and of course the negative American diesel perception. What's your thoughts on this? Could it go???

Message: better torque sure. Better mileage to a degree, But have you seen the price of diesel fuel lately? At one time diesel was preferred over gas because diesel fuel was cheaper. No more. I predict that diesel will keep rising as more and more diesel vehicles hit the road in lieu of gas. So if you're paying more at the pump will your mileage ( miles per dollar ) really be much better? Although you will still more miles between fillups which is good on trips and of course the better torque for towing. Still I don't think that 15 mpg is bad for a 4X4 quad cab.

Message: This comes up pretty often.
Diesel fuel costs more. But if it really does increase fuel mileage by 50-75%, it's a whole lot cheaper to run. With the increased purchase cost, the break even point works out about 40K'ish miles. Sooner if you do light to moderate towing.
The general concensus seems to be that a smaller lighter turbo diesel will sell like hot cakes. Personally, that's the only thing that would bring me back to the dealership. It would be nice to tow my car trailer and still get 20+ mpg.

Message: True that diesel is more than gas. At today's fuel costs and my 16,000 miles per year, the Diesel Dak would save me $400+/year. That would likely pay for the difference in purchase price. Other benefits though are reduced foreign oil dependence, extended engine life, and less CO2 production.
You bring up a good point about future diesel prices. I guess that's somewhat of a gamble for auto makers as they try to predict future demand and prices. As I understand it, diesel has gone up in part because of the new standards.
Don't get me wrong, I still like my current Dakota. If fuel consumption is the only thing I'm really unhappy about, then it's still a good truck. A Cummins Dakota would seal the deal for me on my next purchase. That thing should go 200,000 miles easy! I just question whether DCX would make the gamble.

Message: I think for a heavy duty truck like a 3500, diesel has always been a great option. Certainly cheaper to run and the monster torque of the I6 is the cornerstone of the truck.
The world has changed, and though gas is now hovering around $2/gallon, there's no assurance that it won't skyrocket again. Potentially much higher than it was before. Hybrids are worthless for real trucks, so is MDS for large gains in mpg.
I think diesel is the way to go for light duty trucks looking 5 years out. It's a question of whether Daimler Chrysler will give us the option of a mid size truck diesel (Dakota/Durango), or whether they think they limit the option to full size trucks.
I think I read Toyota may have a Taco or Tundra Diesel option in the future. F150's will have a Range Rover diesel option in the future. Chevy has the option of using the popular I4 diesel from Isuzu in their Colorado. I see Cummins as the best and I do want to stay with Dodge. Please make a Dakota with V6 Cummins in 2010...

Message: The europeans are way ahead of us in diesel trends, and they run them in little econo-type cars as well. While fuel costs will always be an issue, not only does diesel have to be half-again more expensive (give or take) to break even when measured against gas prices vs mileage outcomes, diesels also last longer (I'm sure the car companies will find a way to make a cheap diesel that won't last long). Also, when you consider that they can run on biodiesel without mods, and even cooking oil can be used with a $300 "greasel" kit, I'm all for it. Cummins has already proven diesels can be very clean, and still make huge power, so, no more excuses. All this hybrid talk is just that, talk. Take a look at the ones on the market, all have gas engines that can't out-do a straight diesel VW TDI, and those little rascals scoot pretty good, especially when you're getting 40+mpg doing it! Wouldn't you think a true hybrid, with mileage as the goal, would have a diesel, instead of a gas engine? Then they'd be looking at more like 80mpg, but are they doing it? I'm sure they'd say it would be way too expensive with that diesel, but the hybrid buyers get tax credits, the same would apply, so again, no excuses.

Message: is Dodge going to stay with Cummins? a friend of mine just bought a '06 Ram 2500 CC 4x4 LWB with the Cummins and he says that they are going to start using a Mercedes designed diesel and getting away from the Cummins.
anyone ever hear/read of this?

Message: Dosn't really have to be a Cummins. The engine the Liberty had would be ok or something a bit larger of the same make. Anyway if any truck could use better fuel economy it would be the big bulky Ram pick-up.

Message: on the Mythbusters TV show, they used cooking oil in a stock diesel engine and it ran fine without the grease conversion. Of course it doesn't mean that long term use wouldn't cause problems.

Message: The greasel kit doesn't do anything amazing. The biggest issue is to keep the fuel in liquid form. If it gels, you're screwed, so the kit is designed to keep the fat flowing (heater element in grease tank, usually), and allow starting and shutting down on diesel with a valve that allows switching of tanks.

Message: The problem is not with the manufacturers. It is with "Those who know what is best for us," government.
It took more than a year and lots of money to get the Cummins HO engine legal in California.
As an example of efficiency; we had two identical Land Rovers, the diesel used the same lower engine as the gas. Went twice as far on a tank.

Message: im surprised no one has brought up the banks dakota. they took a 4-cyl dak sport and put a twin turbo cummins 5.9 diesel in it. it is the world's fastest pickup truck. it went like 220 mph at the bonneville salt flats, after it towed it's own equipment trailer to the flats and got over 20 mpg. i think diesel in a dakota would be a great idea for alot of people. I wouldnt get one but that's only because i hate the sound of diesel engines. for me the only sound i can live with is a mopar v-8 with a free flowing exhaust. if they could ever make a diesel sound like a 360 with flowmasters, i'd definately get one.

Message: I don't doubt a Dakota with the 5.9 could haul some a$$. With a chip flash and new turbine, that beast can have monster torque (and it already does). I can't really imagine trying to manage it in a relatively light weight Dakota.
My preference is for Daimler to put a Cummins 6 cylinder into the Dakota. I'd take the Liberty engine today though if they offered it.

although i agree, an inline 6 diesel would be much more practical.

Message: Well, what you guys didn't bring up is the question of this new Diesal fuel we are using. Less sulfer less polution right? but isn't there less oil in the fuel also? thats one reason why diesals last so long. because of the amount of oil in the fuel.
