i somehow lost the first post.
i was driving in 4 wheel on some slick roads. i got to the interstate stopped and put it into 2wd. i drove about 35 miles. when i got off the interstate i notice smoke everywhere. i popped the hood and saw alot of smoke. all my guages were good and my coolent looked good. i think my 4wd didnt disengauge and i fried it. i drove about another hundred yards and it seemed fine. If i fried my4wd can i still safely drive in 2wd. thanks in advance.

Assuming your tires are the same stand up size all around, I don't think you damaged it on the freeway. Sharp turns on pavement Are the real killer and freeways have sweeping curves normally. Reguardless, if you did damage the front end or transfer case, You would be hearing clashing busted gears. You never mentioned the year. I'm guessing you have on the fly shifting into 4 wheel drive. If so the gears turn all the time, there just disengaged. If you did SMOKE your 4 wheel drive, it will be because you ran it out of grease. This will fry the gears unusable. The smoke must have had a smell that would indicate the type of fluid that's over heated. I'm guessing you was running in snow. Maybe deep snow of slush and the truck collected some in the lower engine compartment.

It was a nasty smell to it. kinda like burnt oil. I checked it and it appears there is a pressure release valve coming off the front pumpkin. i think the grease shot out of there and hit the headers. which caused the smoke. Im assuming if there is no grease my 4wd gears are shot now. its a 1995.
