i have a 1997 dakota 4wd w/318ci-my question is
will this tow a 20ft enclosed trailer weighing
6000lbs? if so, what mods should be done.

It'd do it, but things would be a lot more stable with a full-size. It's the weight for stopping that's #1 concern.

I had the very same 4x4 and 318 Auto like yours
dnatale but mine was a 98.

I added a class five frame hitch set up. Added a
tranny cooler, trailer brake kit, trailor light
kit and pulled a 19' trail lite travel trailor
with no problems. It didn't not weight 6k!

Go to any RV dealership. They have charts that
tell you what your 97 can haul, SAFELY

That's the key word, SAFELY..

I wouldn't worry too much about the stopping; a trailer that size should have it's own brakes to handle its share of the stopping - though you definitely want to make sure the you have that braking set up with an electric brake controler. Older campers that size could weigh that much, especially loaded. Tranny cooler is a good idea, and you might want a weight distributing hitch as well. I tow about 5500 with my truck, no problem.
