i just bought a 88 3.9 auto 4wd and the guy i bought it of said i couldent put it into 4wd unless i was moving in gear is this true to all dakota's of that year?

4 hi you can put it in stopped or moving.4 LO while STOPPED put it in neutral then shift.Instructions should be on sunvisor.
