I bought a 4 banger s-10 about three months ago and the thing has given me nothing but problems. It's a 2000 with only 85k. I got it for a daily driver so I could finish the work on my dakota to make it a show truck. Since I had the s-10 I have had to do more work on it than the kota, so it's gotta go.
I am thinking about getting a cheap gen 2 or 3 4 banger 5-speed dakota to replace the pos chevy. What do guys think of yours as far as performance and gas mileage? How reliable is the lil 2.5? Is there another 4 banger truck that you would reccomend over the dakota? I have to have something that is good on gas mileage and I need a truck.

honestly a 4 cyl dak is a waste of time and money. get a 80's toyota pickup 2wd if you want a truck that gets good mileage. or a VW rabbit diesel pickup.

those little Rangers go lots of miles. Rated best in MPG's on the newer models.

4 cylinder Ranger. It'll probably be more trouble-free than the S-10 was and way quicker than either the Dak or the S10 would be with a 4. I drove a Reg Cab for 5 years. If you kneww how to drive a stick it had good Pep and I really didn't have to do much of anything serious to it up until 107 thousand miles when I traded it. You might have minor electrical stuff and interior quality issues that really don't need to be fixed in a vehicle you don't care about keeping perfect but the suspension and engine should be solid.
Loved my I-beam front end. I beat the hell out of it and everything was tight when I got rid of it. Though I love my V8 Quad CAb, my little itty bitty 4-banger Ranger felt like it had a more solid front end than my Dodge.

Thanks guys. I've never really been a ford fan, but I guess I'll go test drive a couple rangers and see how it works out.

if you want something cheap and reliable try and find an older isuzu. if have seen quite a few around here with well over 200k miles and run like a top. very cheap and good mileage.
just make sure it's not one of those re-badged s-10's that gm was supplying them with in the early 90's i think.

My girlfriend has a 4banger and loves it ! She stepped out of a F-150 , the one thing she loves most is the fact that it is now very hard to get a Speed Violation ! A good headwind will render 5th gear useless ! Other than that it's a fine truck !!
