Subject: 92 Dakota Gauge problem
IP: Logged

Message:
Hi,
I have a 92 CC Dak with 3.9 Auto 228k miles. Last week I started it and my Speedo and Oil pressure gauges were the only ones working, no tach, temp, fuel, or batt. The next day all was working fine again. It has since done this 8 more times, sometimes a restart will bring them back, sometimes not. I have checked for ground and everything seems ok? Any suggestions? Someone locally mentioned possible ignition switch. Anyone heard of this?

Thanks

If you've taken out the dash panel, used electrical cleaner spray stuff on all the gauge plugs, and made sure they were all securely plugged, ignore this post.

Once upon a time when my '94 only had under 200,000 miles, the lights started blinking, the buzzers buzzing, and the gauges jumping around while I was driving along. It'd randomly quit acting all possessed and then resume at many inopportune moments. After removing the dash gauge panel, we found only one plug slightly loose. Made sure all the connections were good again, reassembled the dash, and never had another problem like that (and it's been at least another 100,000 miles.)

"Someone locally mentioned possible ignition switch." Nope. Then nothing would work. It's a poor contact in the electrical plugs to the back of your instrument panel.

Thanks for the info guys. I will try the electrical cleaner. What I have noticed now that it has been doing it more often is the first 5 or 6 starts of the day everything works fine. After that I have the problem for the rest of the day. The next morning all is well again for 5 or 6 starts then...... you get the idea. Hopefully I will have time to tear it apart this weekend.

Careful removing the big part of the dash if it's at all cold. When I pulled out my 94's "woodgrain" section from behind the steering wheel, one part bent too far and cracked. I ended up painting the woodgrain anyway so it didn't matter, but I think I also stripped something on the 1st part I removed under the column cuz sometimes it falls off now.
Hope you have a heated garage or at least can drive around long enough to heat the interior first!

Did you drop the steering column to get clearance? That's what you need to do to remove the trim panel and avoid bending it too much.

All I did was lower the wheel as far as it'd go. In the summer when I got around to painting the dash, it flexed with no problems either way (probably cuz it was already cracked) so I've never unbolted the column. And that's probably cuz of the time we dropped the Cutlass column- literally. Quite painful to see, but a good warning.
(Yeah, not to get with an Olds fan, heheh.)
Just be careful either way.
