Message: I just got a 91 Dakota 318 AUTO 4X4 cheap, and the transmission seems to be on it way out. I have to pedal it to get it out of first, then it seems like it may be missing a gear(2) but I'm not sure since I haven't driven the truck before. Should I try new fluid and filter or just get it rebuilt before it gets worse and more expensive to rebuild.
Anything I should try.
Thank You

Message: I would try the fluid change first. It isn't that expensive. I wouldn't worry too much about waiting for the rebuild. Unless you blow a gear apart, the rebuild price will not vary too much because most places just buy a kit and put it all in. It doesn't matter if one thing is bad, or 10.

Message: ok, I'll change the fluid and take her for a boot and see what happens.
Thank you
