Subject: Wiring a brake controller question.
IP: Logged

Message:
I would like to install an electric trailer brake
controller and a 7-pin trailer electrical
connector. The "Brake Control Harnesses" used
with the controller plug into a connector under the dash.
My truck does not have the "towing package"; but,
there is an unused red connector
coming off the switch on the brake pedal.
Currently the connector is covered with grey foam
tape. Is this connector for a brake controller?
Has anyone put a brake controller on their Dak?

The truck is an '03 Quad with 4.7 and stick shift.

Use a volt meter to check that red wire. If it
shows zero volts when peddle is NOT pressed and
12 volts when pressed, you can use that on your
controller. If you can't use the red wire then
locate the wire off the brake switch that is
*hot* (12 volts) when brake peddle is pressed.

Don't forget to add a tranny cooler! That is
factory installed with the tow package.

I have an '01, so this may not apply. When I bought my brake controller, I also bought a pig tail that plugs into the factory harness. I followed the instructions, and soldered the pigtail to the controller. The plug on the pigtail goes directly in to a main circuit connection under the left side of the dash.

The connection is part of a large box, that already has a big bundle plugged in to it. I had to pull that main plug out to fit the controller plug in. It took less than 10 minutes.

you will need to run 6 wires alltogether unless you are running a center auxiliary lead ,then you will need 7 you will have to probably run an extra 2 wires down the frame.1 for the trailer brakes & 1 for the 12v constant battery charge wire, for the brakeaway,if equipped.otherwise you won't get your traier inspected,if it is required for your trailer.usually 1 pos,1 neg, brake switch, off pedal.you should have one.also a heavier ground wire to the vehicles female plug.clean the frame good.do not use the ground wire from a 4 pin setup, very weak.
