Subject: Very rough idle when stopped
IP: Logged

Message:
My 99 Dakota 4x4 V6-3.9L all of a sudden has a very rough idle while stopped a red lights. Runs fine while cruising. I cleaned the throttle body and IAC plus replaced the distributor cap, rotor, wires, plugs, and ignition coil about 6 months ago when I was getting misfire codes.

I replaced the PCV valve and have not been able to find any vacuum leaks. Checked the spark on each plug wire (looks good). If I disconnect the PCV hose from the intake manifold idle increases and rough idle seems to almost disappear (idle rpm decrease every 10 seconds then returns to normal idle). As soon as I reconnect the PCV hose to intake manifold the rough idle immediately returns (new PCV valve). The truck shake when in gear. If I remove the air cleaner duct from the throttle body the rough idle does not change. I can feel a very slight vacuum when I put my finger of the crankcase breather hose. Should this be a more noticable vacuum? I am going to pull the fitting out of the breather grommet (not sure if the fitting is a breather filter or not - I will find out).

Any suggestions?

Breather hose is fine. Does not have a breather filter.

If I disconnect the vacuum line to the air break the idle increase (guess the computer is comensating for vacuum leak?). When I disconnect the PCV hose idle increases as well. If the defroster is no the A/C condensor kicks on ever 10 seconds and reduces the idle. As soon as I reconnect the PCV hose or air break vacuum hose the rough bad idle returns.

Any recommendations - please?

Thanks

Right now I just don't have time to take it to the shop. If it was a little warmer I could ride my motorcycle to work.

It would be nice if I could fix it myself. If you figure it out please post your solution here.

Thanks

Detori, I'm on my third dakota, the rough idle just comes with age. I use a fuel system cleaner (chevron)everytime I change my oil, was recommended by several mechanics. I also get my fuel system cleaned every 30,000 miles at a lube shop,(they do it manually) you'll see loads of build-up screaming out of the tailpipe while this process is done. It seems to help. I think it's just a flaw from Dodge you just have to deal with.

Just my two cents worth but it sure sounds like
you have a vacuum leak somewhere. Check every
vacuum hose connection for splits or cracks.

Good luck

I hav not been able to find any vacuum leaks. In fact the truck runs better with a vacuum leak but still has rough idle when cold.

One thing I forgot to mention because I did not think it could have cause the problem.

Last Friday I was rear ended while sitting at a red light. My truck took zero damage but the car that hit me was pretty mangled. The next day this problem with the rough idle started.

I do not know how getting hit in the rear could cause a rough idle but I figured I had better mention it. Maybe someone has a possible solution.

Thanks

Nope. My 92 Dakota with 157K miles idles as smoothly as a new car. Rough idle indicates either a maintenance problem or a failed part.

Have you checked for codes yet? Going the simple route, sounds to me something got knocked loose/broke when you was hit. This could be a part or hose or a chunk of carbin/dirt buildup. When you disconnect the PCV/brake hoses it increases air flow into your intake. in effect, this causes the faster idle but also makes the mixture super lean. Have you checked the plenun for blown gasket? Not a likely answer but still possible. Also wondering what kind of wires you bought. If there not in the lumes proper it is possible you lost connection inside one or more wires as they did a good flop during hit. I put new wires on my 99 5.2 and 3 months or so later I developed a rough idle and lose of power. it came and went at first then finally was rough all the time . My OBD scanner told me it was #7 cylender. It was a bad wire and these wires had a life time warrenty. They replaced them for free. point is, New parts does not mean there not defective. Also, when your AC kicks in your idle should kick up a bit rather then go down. Fix that problem first.

Check engine light error codes are misfire in cyliners 4 and 6.

When I went to change the plugs in those cyl today I notice oil. It appears as though the valve gasket on the air filter side of the engine has blown and is leaking oil on my #4 spark plug (no oil on wire just outside of plug.

I will have to replace the valve gasket and see it that fixes it. Any suggestions while I have the cover off?

Thanks

Still Trying

Checked plug wires and they all are connected to the correctly from distributor cap to plug. Every night I look for arching from the plug wires but have not found anything.

Installed a new valve cover gasket.

Truck still idles very rough. If I travel about 30 miles the idle smooths out a little but is still noticable. Very rough when engine is cold.

This morning I added 16oz of SeaFoam to half a tank of gasoline and adding a can of Engine Restore (V6) to the crankcase. I will give it a little while to see if there is any improvement.

Truck is going into shop next week. I will let you all know how it goes.

Pulled the plug wire off of #4 cyl and started the truck (let it run for a minute). Then took the plug out and it was covered with fuel so plug is getting fuel. Then I completely removed the coil wire and ran it between the valve cover and throttle body and pulled all the slack back in behind the throttle body. Made sure my 2, 4, & 6 plugs where as far away from each other as possible and pulled the slack back near the firewall.

Truck ran great and after a day the check engine light went out. But then this morning when I started the truck the rough idle was back and the check engine light came back on. I hate to buy new plug wires after just purchasing Bosch wires about 8 months ago.

Should I through money at new wires or could something else be wrong?

Thanks

Part of the reason I replaced the camshaft.
Ran okay, in a manner of speaking, but didn't pass smog.
