Subject: Extended oil change intervals
IP: Logged

Message:
I'm looking to make the switch to Mobil 1 full synthetic. I have the 4.7 V8. Is it rated for extended change intervals like Amsoil?
Also, how long can I run the oil if I change the filter with an OEM filter every 5,000 KM's? I run a lot of highway KM's and put on about 4,000 a month.
Thanks for the info.

To curious,

... just ignore the flamer (in this case "take a hike", but I believe the same flamer goes by many aliases). Unfortunately, he doesn't realize it is advertisers and site sponsors that subsidize this site so he can post for free.

He should be thanking me instead of flaming me.

To answer your OIL question, M1 has two synthetic motor oils. One rated for 5k mile oil change intervals and the other (M1 EP) rated for 15k mile oil change intervals.

To answer your FILTER question, you should always use a filter designed for synthetic oil and/or extended drains if you are going to extend your oil change intervals. OEM filters (in general) are not designed for extended drains.

I hope this helps.

Bottom Line: Long drain capabilities of synthetic oils are well established.

FYI - For anyone considering Amsoil Extended Oil Drains:

The KEY POINT is that --- The 3,000 mile oil change (heavily promoted by BIG OIL and the Quickie Lubes) is overkill, especially with superior synthetic oils.

Amsoil and the 25,000 Mile Oil Change Interval

The "mention" of 25,000 mile / 1 year oil change intervals on the back of an Amsoil bottle is NOT an absolute! One must realize that is for non-severe service (highway miles where you have stable operating conditions) and that the indicated drain interval also has a time period of 1 year maximum as well.

Personally, I would not go 25k miles between oil changes, but I regularly go between 11k and 12k miles between oil changes. Because that is all the miles I put on my vehicle in one year (the maximum suggested TIME interval for an oil change). I havn't driven over 12k miles in one year since 1987.

***** READ THIS PLEASE EVERYONE *****

THE BOTTOM LINE - Under a combination of city and highway circumstances, AMSOIL recommends up to 2 to 3 times longer oil change intervals, which means up to 2 to 3 times the equipment manufacturer's recommendation (If your owners manual states 5k mile oil change intervals, then 10-15k mile oil change intervals would be alright based on your personal driving habits ... (the harder you drive, the sooner the change the oil).

I try to be very clear when talking about extended drains. 10,000 mile oil change intervals are absolutely possible. Up to a 25,000 mile interval is possible under certain conditions, but please read further for additional information.

FILTRATION - Dirt is Enemy #1

Proper filtration is also very important. Amsoil's recommendations are only when you use Amsoil Ea Oil Filters which are designed for extended oil change intervals. Amsoil Oil Filters are rated for 25k miles or 1 year service as well.

Notice: Modifications to engine will change service intervals.

Notice: More frequent service may be required under severe service operating conditions.

Notice: For drain interval beyond 3x manufacturers recommendations ---
(especially the 25k mile change) - oil analysis is recommended for establishing drain intervals.

Amsoil has been in the oil industry for 30+ years. Due to Amsoil's superior synthetic composition and advanced performance additives, AMSOIL performs much longer than do conventional petroleum and other synthetic motor oils. AMSOIL has 30+ years of manufacturing experience and mountains of data and tests to make these claims possible.

TRUE - Amsoil does not own refineries. We are a "blender" just like Redline and Royal Purple and many other speciality oil companies. We use our own "proprietary" formulations to create a superior oil.

A comparable example:

All beer is made from a combination of water, yeast, malt and hops - YET - they all have different characteristics and tastes.

Some beers taste like horse pee ... others delicious.

How many beer companies produce their own water, yeast, malt and hops? Most buy the raw ingredients and "blend", boil, ferment, package, and distribute their own "proprietary" product.

It's the same concept."

Hey Steve. With regards to the two types of Mobil 1, is the Mobil 1 Super Syn Technology Full Snythetic, the one rated for extended drain intervals? If I use an OEM filter, but change the filter only at 3K miles, then top up the oil, would that be just as good as using an extended drain interval oil filter? What kinda mileage you think I could get out of a full synthetic doing 95% highway driving?
