Subject: starter removal problem IP: Logged
Message: I am posting this in a few forums in hope I can get an answer today. I can't get the starter out of my 4.7 dakota. I removed the two bolts and it is still secured to the bell housing some how. Beating on it and prying on it with a bar hasn't worked. I have the new starter so, I think I have removed the right bolts.
I am stumped! Please help.............Rich

Message: Should be just two bolts (my '95 is a bolt and a nut). Now if possibly it failed with the gear engaged in the teeth of the torque converter or flywheel (auto or manual tranny), that may be where some binding is coming from? You could try putting it in gear and rock(push) it back and forth just a bit, engage the parking brake and try to remove it with it in neutral. As I recall when I changed mine last year ('95 w/ auto) I had to tap/ pry on it a bit to get it to break free.
Good luck!

Message: It failed because the solenoid terminal corroded and broke off. I removed the botton plate from the bell housing and checked the teeth and all was good. I gave up and brought it to my mechanic today. Lets see if he has better luck.

Message: Ah, too bad about taking it to a mechanic, I just pulled mine out because the 545RFE tranny blew. There's only 2 bolts holding the starter to the bell housing and 2 wires attached. If you took the 2 bolts out of the bell housing it should have flopped free,,, unless there's something different between your truck and my 03 4x2 truck.

Message: I pulled the two bolts and it is still securely attached to the bell housing. I haven't heard back from the shop yet. Hopefully today!

Message: Thought I give an update.
I got the truck back from the shop. Mechanic said the stud on the bottom was rusted so it swelled locking the starter onto the bell housing. He used heat to get it off and lots of penetrating oil.
