Message: Any body notice a difference with and with out a camper shell for fuel economy? I currently don't own a shell but am in the market for a shell and work racks. I am wondering if there are any opinions on the added weight versus' fuel economy.
My gripes are that truck shell weighs probably over 100lbs and rack another 100lbs and add tools on top of that. How much did your MPGs drop with the added weight or was it even necessary?

Message: I have used a 1993 Snugtop cab-hi shell on a '92 and now a '01 Dak for a total of over 370,000 miles. The '92 RC 5.2 auto 3:55 averaged 18 mpg, my '01 RC 4.7 5-spd 3:92 does 19 mpg. I routinely carry about 250 pounds of cargo in my work. One of the most outstanding benefits is the terrific highway speed stability compared to no bed cover at all. Makes a long trip quite pleasant. The added traction/weight bias doesn't hurt either. One thing I like about the Snugtop is that it mounts/removes as a complete unit, with ease.

Message: Did you see the Mythbusters visit this a 2nd time? they did every differnce I could think of on the SAME truck this time. Camper, toneu, tailgate up,tailgate down, tailgate off and one of those goofy airgates. Very unexpectedly the goofy airgate gave the best improvemnt per thier tests. It's hard to beleve that mesh thing would get better mileage than no tailgate at all.

Message: I purchased a leer fiberglass shell with yakama roof rack for my 02 QC 4.7L 4x4 3.55 LSD auto with 265/75/16 tires and get the same fuel economy as I did before i had the shell.
I also have a uws in bed toolbox loaded with around 150 - 200 lbs of stuff and skid plates. I also always have stuff in the cab. With me in it, my truck wieghs around 5400 lbs easily.
