Subject: Steering Knuckle/Brake Caliper IP: Logged
Message: you guys are going to rip me a new one for this...ok, i have a 98 slt 2wd. i'm the 3rd owner and not too long after I got the truck I did the front brakes. when I put the pins back in to hold the calipers on they ended up pulling the threads right out of the knuckle. 2 of them were already stripped and i ended up stripping a 3rd, so I only have one pins actually threaded in and tightend right. I'm an idiot I know. anyways, every now and then I check the pins to make sure they arent coming out, I'll bang them back into position to be sure. I know that the caliper will basically hold itself on, or else it would have been ripped off already, but its obviously not safe or good for my stopping distance. Does anyone think helicoiling them will work? Or should I have the knuckles retaped? The extreme thing would be to buy new knuckles and i'm pretty sure they ain't cheap. anyone else have this problem? like I said, I'm an idiot.

Message: Yes, a helicoil will work just fine. The retainer pins only need enough torque to keep them from falling out. Thier strength is in shear.
