Fill both tanks. Drive the same distance. Then fill both tanks again. Now you know what your fuel mileage really is.
If your mom really is getting 20+mpg, she needs to contact Dodge so they can figure out what they did right on that truck."
My 92 Dakota club cab with 4WD, V-6, 3.55 axle on 4-spd auto, with metal cap, gets 20 mpg on average. I've gotten as high as 23 mpg on a long trip. All stock.
My brother owned it new, and before that he had a new 88 Dakota V-6 5-spd regular cab. It got 25 mpg, stock.
Guess Dodge did something right.

Message: Josh, you math is right, but your procedure is not.
You can not use 22 gallons just because your gage reads "E". The only way to get accurate gallons used is to leave with a full tank (not full on the indicator, but full at the gas station), drive a distance, and then fill up at a gas station. What you put in at the station will be the gallons used.
You also can not assume you used 11 gallons if you have 1/2 tank. I know on my truck, the first half of the gage, is larger (meaning I get more miles on the first indicated 1/2 tank than the last half)
The way you drive has alot to do with what kind of mileage you get. But ultimatly, with the exception of Bob Lincoln and a few lucky others, 20 MPG is about the best anyone with a dakota can expect. 16-19 HW and 11-15 city is very realistic depending on the exact drivetrain that you have.

Message: I dont understand what you all thinking specially you Mr Kowlaski I never said it was full from the F mark I filled the tank until it was flowing over if the factory specs are accurate and it is a 22 gallon tank then it had 22 gallons in it. Iam not the smartest out there but not an Idiot either.I ran the whole tank out almost to running out of gas I stopped to Fill up again the truck took 21 gallons full to the top past Full mind you.So if it is a 22 Gallon tank Totally Full And my spedo trip said 374 empty then I got 17 miles to the gallon. Hows that guessing?

Message: A little off - you should divide the 374 miles you drove by the 21 gallons it took to fill it back up; not the 22 gallon size of the tank. Works out to about 17.8; amazing how your example worked out exactly 17 with no decimal point !
Got it now ?

Message: Hey Pugsy:
Here is the math: 3.8 litres = 1 US gallon
11 litres divided by 3.8 = 2.9 US gallons
100 km = 62 miles
62 miles divided by 2.9 US gallons = 21.4 mpg
There you have it.

Message: what are you guys doing to get such high mileage? i have a '98 Dak CC 5.2 Litre 4x4, i have a K&N Gen 2 FIPK intake and filter, and i just changed my plugs and wires ( E3 plugs and Taylor 8mm wires) and cap and rotor. my mileage is averaging to 13-15.4 mpg, getting about 300 to a tank when i use premium gas. if i use regular gas i get about 250-270 to the tank. i just put a tonnaeu cover but it hasn't made any difference in my mileage. my mileage doesn't change if i drive to work in stop-n-go traffic all day or if i'm just cruising down the highway at 70-75mph.

Message: "what are you guys doing to get such high mileage?" Nothing. It's all stock. I'm just light on the gas pedal, do a lot of highway driving, and keep it tuned. Worst I ever get is 18 mpg with more of a mix of city driving.

Message: As stated before, alot of things affect mileage. If I go outside the state of NY and get some non ethenol gas, my mileage goes up between 1-2 mpg. Also, different places have different roads. Good pavement = good miles. I have also hear of people changing tires (type, not size)and gaining or loosing 1-2 mpg. So all said and done, two of the exact same trucks, driven the same way can have 4+ mpg difference.
I hear ya sneilan. I am in the same boat as you. Keep in mind, the sticker on that truck is 14/18. So if you are getting 13-15, you are right on. I have been keeping track of my mileage for a while. Lots of people claim gains with an electric fan. I saw no change. Same with the toneau cover. I didn't gain anything. And lastly, the CIA. No change. It sounds better, and runs down the highway better and heats up faster in the winter, but mileage didn't change.
The only time I picked up some mileage is when I installed the Hypertech. I picked up about .75 mpg with the 87 tune.

Message: An off question--
How accurate are the overhead console MPG readings in Dakotas that have them?
When I was nice to my 4.7L V8 QC '03, I regularly got 17 MPG in country driving. Now I'm not so nice, and I get 14 now. I cant help myself when it comes to the gas pedal.

Message: Dustin, the overhead on my 98 x-cab 4X4 is way off. It has never been close. I think it got the wrong gas gauge when it was new from the factory. I have theoptional 22 gal tank and I think my gauge is for the smaller tank (guessing 16 gallons?).I always divide miles traveled by gallons used to get an acurate figure.

My overhaed was within 0.2mpg of what I calculated using the fillup method. Keep in mind, if you want to look at one tank only, you have to reset the overhead at the same time you fill up. Also, to truely check the overhead compared to actual, you should run 3 or more tanks and sum things up. The reason for this is that when you fill, unless you keep going till it spills out, each fill is to a different level. Summing three tanks give a good average. I ended up with 741 miles and 53.048 gal. giving me an average 13.97 mpg. Overhead read 14.1.
Some people have accurate ones, and other say that they are way off. I tend to beleive that the people that have inaccurate ones aren't testing them right. Unless you change tires or injectors, the computer should know how much fuel its using, and how many miles you have traveled.

Message: My overhead has never figured mileage correctly. I think mine got the wrong gas gauge when it was new from the factory. I have the optional 22 gal tank and I think my gauge is for the smaller tank (guessing 16 gallons?). My gauge reading seems to coincide with the amount of fuel it assumes would be left if I had the smaller tank. I can drive well beyond when the gauge says empty. Usually at least 60 miles! I reset the overhead at each fueling and always do the mileage calculations manually. I always divide miles traveled by gallons used to get an acurate figure.
