Subject: 5-45RFE BLEW IP: Logged
Message: Well, I thought the 5-45RFE's were pretty bullet proof until until a few hours ago. I was driving 75MPH and heard a wierd noise that lasted for 10 seconds, by the time I turned the stereo and heater off it was gone and the truck kept running fine. I pulled off the road to get something 10 miles later and when I dropped the truck back into drive,,, nothing?!? Gave it a little gas and it POPPED into gear,,, hmmm? Took off and heard a grinding noise no one wants to hear 90 miles from home. Both forward and reverse were making the same noise and I found the noise to come from the tranny, removing the dipstick showed metal in the tranny fluid, Awww CRAP!
Anyone have this happen to them before on a 45RFE or 5-45RFE?
Looks like I'll have a fun filled weekend tearing into the tranny and figuring out what let go, sounds like a bearing or gear? Don't know if I'm going to rebuild or get a used tranny, rebuild $400-600 + hard parts or $900 for a used tranny.
Anyone know where to get a good low mileage used 5-45RFE tranny?
Thanks, Dan

Message: Not knowing your truck, I searched car-part.com (many salvage yards online) for '04 4x4, and got 5 pages of results. Quite a few low milage in $500-700 range once you get past the price shock of the first page or so... Good luck !

Message: but if you found that much metal on the dipstick
just think how much went through the entire tranny.
my .02 i think you'de be better off with a low mile replacment from a salvage yard.

Message: My 46RH has seen speeds up to 105 MPH and that was with over 190K miles. I'm sorry about your tranny but there are always lemons out there.

Message: Really not complaining about the tranny, just relaying my bad fortune. When I first heard the noise it sounded like the diff,,, I quietly said to myself RIGHT-ON, now I have an excuse to throw in a set of 4.10's, no such luck. I'm going to dig into the tranny to see what let go,,, and if it was ATF related. Galled bearing, toasted gear set or something that just broke, should be interesting to see what blewup. I'm actually pretty happy that I found the used tranny, now I don't have to spend a weekend rebuilding the tranny. When I called around Vegas there were none to be found, Car-Part was the golden ticket.
mikesz,
$61.00!!!
where from?
Closest I have seen is about $75-90. I need to get one on order ASAP as the tranny's coming next week. How did you set-up the reprogramming kit in your tranny? I'm thinking of the tow-go setup since i'm either cruising down the freeway or hauling my boat, not into doing the drag race thing anymore.

Message: Just call TransGo directly. They just sell on telephone. It took 4-5 days and I have had it shipped to Poland.Tel.number is 626 443 7451.Web page is:transgo.com.They even do not give a mail adress.Very nice service.
Re:set up;no set up at all.Just put the springs, new piston rings, valve and its plug and the plate in it's place according to instruction attached and that's it!Takes max 2 hours for person like me,who didn't saw auto tranny inside before.Do not forget about resistor between wires no.1 & 3.They show the harness of 4 wires, but there are 3 in fact.Found only one thing a bit problematic;new valve plug dia.is slightly higher than original and it does not fit the hole.Normally I should have call them ,but They are on Pacific coast what means minus 9 hours. Finally I hammer it in very delicate way.Everything work great!
There also several parts attached to be installed when Your tranny is out.Ask the guy.
Now i have a brand new truck.Auto tranny which shifts like fast manual.
