Message: They are useless crap made for people who are too stupid to know better. They change the light temperature to blue, which is not as easily reflected from objects or detected by the retina. They also tend to scatter the light, making more glare.
Whenever I see them, it's like a big sign that says, "Look at me! I'm a moron!".
Even worse than fog lights on a clear night.
However, you can easily improve the light quality of your truck by installing a bright white bulb, like GE Silverstar or PIAA. That is a definate improvement. Only takes a bout 15 minutes to do.

I'm affraid you do not see a difference between real Xenon lights and so called xenon lights from ebay(10 USD)First option is ca.200USD + labour.Additionally You can choose light temp.Cheap ones are just different bulbs called xenon and I fully agree with You it is for morons.
Here in Europe all cars of upper and luxury class are factory equipped with xenons ,even bi-xenons.They are really good.Just next lighting generation.

Message: A true Xenon HID lamp is very expensive, and worth it. It gives a clean white light with a sharp demarcation line. Good range, excellent visibility, and almost no glare.
However, those are not available for the Dakota. What is available are the inexpensive "xenon" replacement bulbs.

Message: Ruphus, Is that you?
Anyway,
I wouldn't install them on a v6, it might disrupt the whole space time continuum!

Message: i dont know a lot about this, but this is what i've gathered in the past...they make xenon bulbs which just plug in like a normal bulb. they suck, they're blue but not any brighter, at least the ones I bought and took out after one night of driving. but they make conversion kits to change your normal headlight system into the HID xenon lights. I think xenon is just the type of bulbs they use, but im not sure. The HID stands for something like "High Intense Definition" or somethin, I dont know, sounds like a TV when you say it like that. but I have seen the kits to convert the lighting system. I think I saw them on ebay. should work for any car. probably a b*tch to install.

Message: boomer in on the right track. The HID xenon lights are kits becuse they xenon bulbs contain no filiments. They HID kit has an igniter.
the HID xenon lights are blueish white (can be other colors too but the blueish white is the most popular) because it more closesly resembles daylight light spectrum. It's around 4400 lumens (typical 100 watt bulb is in the neighborhood of 1300 lumens).
other colors are blue, yellowish, purple whitish.
There are legal and illegal versions. HID Xenon bulbs follow the same guidelines from the federal DOT as halogen bulbs and should be clearely marked as such (on the bulb it should say DOT and not "for off-road use only" - or similar).
There are companies that make halogen bulbs to imimitate the Xenon. It's easy to get confused, check for a filament. if it has a filament it's NOT a true HID xenon.
read the info on the motor vehicle lighting council website - mvlc.info.

Message: NO XENON HID conversion kit available from any source is DOT approved if installed outside of the factory. Moreover, in the U.S, this is not street legal for use on public roads. As a result, we officially endorse the kit for exhibition and off-road use and will only sell the kit to be used for these purposes. We are not responsible for buyers who violate the terms of sale while in which they will assume all responsibilities for any unauthorized or unintended use other than exhibition or off-road use.

Message: the google ads on the right of this post have links to HID conversions. and HID stands for High Intensity Discharge. the ones for the genIII dakotas are like $465. if I had that kind of money to blow, well, i wouldnt be using it to upgrade my headlights. They are sweet tho. I think just using some aux. driving lights can give the same effect, especially to on comming traffic, they'll be pissed either way. but at least aux lights you can turn on and off.
