Message: Ok...today i moved my truck out of the shop, and after maybe 5 minutes of driving slowly, i put it in neutral and stopped....and it sounded EXACTLY like a cammed motor. It never died, just idled really rough, so i stepped on the petal to hold it about 1500rpm, and holding it steady the rpms would go from 1400 to 1500 on the tac...and i could hear the motor change speeds.
I drove it a little further and it did it's popping/power loss, it did it a lot longer than I've had it do it before. My brother revved it up from the TB...revving it up quick, then letting it come down, and doing it again...it would go up and down a couple times, then it would Die.....this is the only time it has ever died.
We're thinking it's got to be the TPS now...is there anyway to test the one I've got???...i have one from the v8 TB i got, but the wiring plugs are a different style, so i can't just swap them.

Message: With your new explainations, It now sounds more like a fuel delivery problem which can be a lot of things. You should be getting a code with this happening on a regular basis . Get it on that Snap-on you mentioned and hopefully it has the ability to answer your questions. Trying to get the answer on here is a tough way to go. You get a list a mile long and it may not be any of them. Dan is trying hard to help you.
So many problems .... So little

Message: There are many things that can cause backfiring. In order to narrow it down, you need to know when it happens, when it doesn't happen.
as obio3 suggested, hook up the scanner and watch the fuel pressure and sensors on the tb.
backfiring only when cold can be vastly differnet than backfiring when warm.

Message: My 98 3.6 is doing the exact same thing. I have searched these pages trying to figure out the problem but have not found it yet. I read somewhere on this board that it is most likely a fuel pressure problem and just simply turning the engine off and restarting it would help and it does seem to work. I originally thought the problem was only when the engine was cold but have had it happen several times now after driving the truck at normal operating temps and going in to shop for a few minutes and then restarting the truck. Once the engine recovers it can be driven for hours and there will not be a problem. I really am starting to believe it is some sort of bleed down of the fuel system but do not know enough about fuel injection to figure it out.

Message: Have you checked the voltage output of the battery. when my battery was going out mine would idle rough and would die unless I kept my foot of the gas pedal. A battery not putting out full voltage can cause the computer to mess up fuel setting or other things believe it or not. when I got a new battery all these problems disappeared.

Message: my truck has been doing this for about a year, it has been to the garage and tuned up babied and pampered..... today the truck quit and will not start. I had the same situation where the truck would be going along and start popping and backfiring complete power loss. I have an automatic and would shift it down, but this time it never revived itself.
fuel pump is pumping did not take a pressure test.

Message: My `95 with the 318 would run fine for the 1st 20-30minutes then get rough. Turned out to be the ECM (Electronic Control Module). Not a cheap fix...
