Message: Mine was not trouble free, but my problems were not enough to make me want to buy another vendor truck.
My old 95 CC 4x4 3.9L went ~169k with no major failures (no engine or transmission failure). Most of my problems were sensor (oxygen, map, tps, iac, coolant, air bag) or electrical (loose pin @ PCM). I traded it in and saw it driving around town about a month later. I did replace the air compressor, heater core, a/c evaporator, water pump and radiator.
otherwise I just changed brakes, oils, tune-ups, timing chain other routine maintenance. Oh yeah, I had to replace a seat belt connector too.
Keep in mind about 125k miles of those were in Indiana where it could get hot in summer (100+) and cold in the winter (when I moved out of the state it was going on 31 days of below 32 for the HIGH). I also drive it hard and used it as a truck. Many off road fishing trips.
In comparison I had a ford ranger that went through 3 engines (original + 2 rebuilt ones) and 2 transmissions (original + rebuilt one).
Overall, I was definately pleased with the truck, she never left me stranded and never left me stuck (snow, mud, sand). Drove in several major snow storms in Indiana (many snow days) and North Carolina (12" in raleigh and 17" in charlotte).

Message: I've made to 96k with one failure. My rack and pinion broke. Off road four times a day, pull horse trailers and flatbeds, loaded heavy alot. My Silverado had two new front hubs, radiator, four wheel drive rebuilt twice, steering also at the same miliage and took a football field to stop. I like the Dakota.

Message: To get to 157K on my '01, only a rear pinion seal, and a slave valve for the manual tranny system. New greaseable Moog ball joints at 125K. D-C doesn't make a Dak now to compare to this RC 4.7 5-spd with 9.25 3:92 LSD. Absolutely a "keeper".

Message: Glancing through the posts, what becomes obvious is that the kind of service determines the life and condition of the truck.
You in wet and snowy climes have completely different experiences than we in the West, different even than those in seriously hot parts of the country.
Texas Todd makes me think he runs into things, or coasts, to stop.
I was infuriated to discover the brakes wore out and ruined the rotors because Dodge hasn't discovered the squeakers everybody else on the planet uses. On the other hand I think it ridiculous my rear brake shoes have lasted 544,000 miles.
Like grandpa said; 'Take care of it and it'll take care of you."

Message: ok, is this BS? No brake shoes will last 544,000 miles unless the rear brakes aren't working or you never use your brakes. Like maybe a used for business vehicle that has used all freeway miles.

Message: little jer,
Precisely why I will never own another vehicle without anti-lock brakes. They work fine when I have a load and the transmission and brakes change, but that is infrequent.

Message: That sounds more like a problem with the automatic adjusters than anything related to anti-lock. Your rear brakes just aren't adjusted tight enough.

Message: Shatto,
I DON'T run into things, but I do coast some berfore applying the brakes, SOME.
And, I do have a manual, and I do downshift, SOME, not too much though.
And I DO use my parking brake every time I park my truck, which keeps the rear drums in proper adjustment.
I just had new tires put on my truck, the first too sets each lasted about 55,000 miles, and lookes at the front pads, which are not even 1/2 worn.

Message: I didn't say there were no wear bars showing. I didn't even say there was much tread at all. They were fine until the rains, then I raced over to America's Tire Store and got new tires.
By the way, treadless tires work like slicks, hell, they ARE slicks, and are fine for cornering and stopping....in summer.....unless someone spits out the window. Gas mileage is terrible too. Bald tires create more drag.
