Subject: 318 360 block IP: Logged
Message: i may have understood this wrong but i always thought that the 318 and 360 blocks were the same. just different bore and mains. and to reach 160 they had more stroke too. but i was told that i cannot bore my 318 to fit 360 pistons cause its .090. difference. and thats too much. any help?

Message: The core they use to make the 318 and the 360 are different if you try and bore out a 318 to fit the 4" pistons of the 360 you will be in the water jacket of the 318 ......

Message: Clint - you understood wrong. While the blocks appear externally similar, they are different. A couple of us aleady pointed this out to you on the first page of the "HEY rammer" thread almost 2 weeks ago, why the continued confusion ?

Message: While I understand your confusion Clint. I also thought the same about the LA-Magnum engines being based on the 318. And in someways they are.
Just like the big 488V10 was really just a 360 bored with 2 more clyinders added.

Message: The 318/360 being commonly called the "same" stems from the engines being the same design/same family, but different in the ways already explained.

Message: see what i thought you were all saying was that with boreing alone i couldnt not reach 360. i did not know that you cannot fit a 360 4" piston in a 318. thats all i wanted to know. how the hell did they get a 318 to a 408 with low enough compression to still have a supercharger?

Message: Some blocks, especially the older ones, come through with thicker cylinder walls that will actually allow boring to .090" (for a 402 displacement) but only sonic testing can determine this.

On the compression side of things, that's handled with the pistons.

Message: clint, a 408 stroker is based off of a 360. a 390 stroker is based off of the 318.

Message: A 408 is a 360 + 4.00" crank+ .030" over bore.
This comes out to a 4.03 bore X 4" stroke = 408 CI.
A 390 is a 318 4.00" crank+ .030" over bore
This comes out to a 3.94" bore X 4" stroke = 390
The mains on a 360 are larger than a 318. The 318 can be machined to use the larger mains but that can cost lots of$$$$
Im trying to find out if I can get a 3.31 with the 360 mains. That would be equal to a 338 with a .030" overbore. The bore/stroke ratio would be very high wich would make for some nice revs.
Old setup: 1/4 mile on old setup: 13.965 @ 100.10 MPH, Crappy 2.236 60' on street tires Mods: Paxton NOVI 2000 supercharger @ 10 #'s, M1 4Bbl, F&B 58mm TB, Gibson headers, JBA Y-pipe, and a Locker

Message: i think you'll lose some torque but your blower should help compensate for that. if you're running an auto you may have to up your stall rpm.

Message: To put a 360 crank in a 318 (or 440 in 383/400) I've heard its cheaper to turn down the mains on the crank than machining the block. Edges should be radiused for strength. Still pricy though.

Message: no way his block is ok. I was driving behind Rammer when it came apart. And as many times as that rod came thru the oil pan the block had to be wacked by the rod and who knows it may have wacked the head(s) too!
some day we will pull his engine...
