Subject: ABS Syetem failed ???
IP: Logged

Message:
Had a close call the other day, brakes faded when I needed them the most. In an emergency. I stomped on the brakes and the nose dived, the brakes then faded and some ugly nose came from the master cylinder or ABS system. (It kind of sounded like a the sound a bad shock would make when it is leaking and pushed closed. (wooooossssh)) The nose poped back up and I was driving again with my foot still on the brake and no ware near the gas pedal. Got any ideas as to what the hell happened.........

Possibly it was working as it was susposed to. Since the ABS, pumps when slammed, causing a sound you don't expect, and allowing you to control the truck.

But if I re-read it a lot it, I don't think you came to a full stop. But a lot of people think that ABS brakes are broken while functioning correctly. I actually hope this is what it is. Because I hate it when my truck has potential problems.

The dealer informs me that the ABS sytem is operating normally and it just takes time to get use to the noise and operation of 4 wheel ABS in new vechiles.

While driving home in my 1999 Dakota 4X4 extended cab the abs and brake dash lights came on. My speedometer also will not work until I reach about 30mph!. I just had my truck inspected 2 days before(Pa)and the brakes were fine. The brakes work but a can't tell if the abs is working. All fuses are ok.

Phillip...suspect it could be your speed sensor. Don't think the sesnsor is more than $20 but it could be a pain to change out. Not sure about the 4X4 models but I had the dealer change mine out last month due to similar symptoms(Under warranty).

I had the same thing happen as Phillip. I have a 1999 Dakota 318 V8 club cab. The abs light and the brake light came on, the speedometer quit registering below 30mph. My mechanic inspected the brakes and said they appeared to be working ok. He then temporarily replaced the speed sensor but this didn't fix the problem. Does anyone know what could cause this?

I had the same problem, brake light & abs light were on. I changed the rear speed sensor and the problem was fixed.
The rear speed sensor is actually part of the ABS system, in most cases it is located on the top of your rear differential.
Sometimes it is referred to as the RABS sensor (rear abs).

The sensor was $52 at the dealer. It is easy to put in as well. Just dont bend or kink your brake lines when you are loosening the nut that holds the sensor in place. The brake lines are right above the nut assembly.

Thank you Purple Dak,
I replaced the sensor on top of the differential and the problem is fixed.
$42 for the sensor and about an hours work. The hardest thing was prying the
old sensor out. I managed to drive a flat bladed screwdriver under it until
it finally popped out. The new one went in with no problem. Thanks to this
site I saved a bundle on diagnostics and other charges at the dealer. I'm
going to call my mechanic and let him know what to do the next time someone
has the same problem.

If this is know to fix the problem with the ABS system then why has there not been a recall on this item that is faulty ... or are they waiting till someone is killed first because of this fault.

I have a 91 Dakota 4x4 club cab w/318ci.(160,000kms)
I just had a prob with a leak in my brake line, had it all replaced including both rear cylinders and front flex hoses. Cost of $350.00cdn.
Now my abs-brake dash lights are on and i have no headlights, taillights, brakelights, daytime running lights, and my tach doesn't work (stuck at 1000rpm).
all my fuses look fine, this seems to be intermittent, as it was fine when picked up from the shop. Now it's the next day...
Is this the rear abs sensor too???

Got the same problem with ABS light and parking brake light. Haven't observed the 30kph problem, but I'm going to check now.

In any case my mechanic says the ABS module for my truck (2000 Dakota Club Cab Sport) costs $1250 (Canadian).

Ridiculously expensive.

I've had to slam the brakes a few times now and my ABS has kicked in and to tell you the truth , it seemed like I gained speed , the ABS system in Dakota's is just plain screwed up . I'm a mechanic By trade and I've road tested many vehicles and tested many ABS systems and none compare to my DAK , my wife even crashed the damn thing because the stupid thing gained speed when the ABS kicked in . I did try something the other day though , when the ABS kickes in and starts to whine and pump most people dont know whats going on and slightly let up on the pedal , I actaully stepped on it harder and it seemed to stop a bit better that any other time but not like what I have felt from other vehicles , maybe thats the trick , step harder , who knows.

On the older Daks with rear ABS only (sensor in rear diff) when the rears are about to lock up the ABS module modulates the pressure to the rear wheels by dumping pressure in the system. This can be unnerving because as you are slowing down and watching the car in front get closer and closer, the ABS might suddenly dump and you find yourself getting much closer to the car in front. All (four) wheel ABS pulses very quickly but the rear only ABS seems to me to pulse a second or two off then back on the pressure and if needed then a second or two off and then back on. Certainly not in the millisecond range like four wheel ABS. The other thing is that four wheel ABS has a pump that runs in the hundreds of psi and they pulse that high pressure very quickly where the rear only ABS has the normal power booster unit with a valve that opens and closes as needed. Certainly not as good as four wheel ABS. Rear ABS much cheaper to replace parts though.

i hate my dakota brakes...the pedal needs way more pressure than any of my other cars and it doesnt stop as well. when the abs kicks in, i too feel like im gaining speed(even when i push it in harder). and it seems the abs kicks in a lot sooner than it should, mine kicks in everytime i go down this hill near my house, or when i dont expect it to. i got into a car accident because of this. im irritated...can i just take it out? what if i were to change my calipers and stuff(aftermarket), would it still work?

I tried asking the mechanic to remove the module since I don't want/need ABS. Mechanic was okay with it, but when I took it home I noticed the speedo wasn't working and it was stalling all the time. Basically the speedo is connected to the same speed sensors as ABS and I presume the fuel injection uses it too (hence the stalling that went away when the module was re-installed).

BTW this is rear ABS.
