Subject: 01 Steering Problems
IP: Logged

Message:
Hi all,

I have an '01 Quad with a 4.7 V8. Yesterday the power steering started giving me fits. It is extremely hard to turn in both directions as if there is no pressure coming from the pump. When I give it a little gas, the steering lightens up quite a bit, so I am not suspecting a mechanical bind. The fluid level is fine. The truck only has 64,000 miles and has been babied, should I suspect that the pump is bad? Should I change out the fluid first and see what that does? The problem came on very suddenly, so I can't see how it would be the fluid slowly going bad.

Also, if I have to replace the pump, Checker tells me there is two different types: one with an 18mm shaft and one with a 17mm shaft. Does anyone know about this and how to tell which one I have before taking it off and measuring.

TIA
Bryan
