Subject: Replacing shocks on my 2002 Quad cab IP: Logged
Message: Hey, finally getting around to replacing the garbage stock shocks. I'd like to know what the readers have been placing on their Dakotas. I have a 2002 Quad Cab 4X4, 4.7L. I'm looking for a little stiffer ride (better handling), but not one that will knock out my wife’s fillings. Been looking at the Bilstein, mono tube HD BE5-2617, BE5-A702 shocks, but also the adjustable Rancho 9000 and KYB AGX shocks. The adjustable shocks are intriguing, because the stiffness can be adjusted, but I don't know if they work very well. Please let me know what you have installed and how you like them, thanks.

Message: Edelbrock IAS made a big difference in handling for the rear of my truck, and I just went with the cheaper twin tube design. You'll likely hear from some guys who also got good results with other brands.

Message: when my front factory shocks on my '00 QC 4x2 took a dump at 28k miles, i bought Monroe Reflex. couldn't be happier. got 65k on the truck now and rides better than ever. i'm sure the Edelbtrocks are great also just haven't tried them.

Message: I replaced them at 65,000 with some Bilstein HD mono-tubes. Kind of pricey, $250+, but it rides better than new. The rear end stays planted better than when the truck was brand new. And they are certainly firmer than the worn-out stockers after 30k.
Mainly I bought them because I believe they will last 100k+ and I wanted to change them and be done. I seem to remember the twin tubes not having the longevity. But I have heard good things about the Monroe Reflexes if you want a little cheaper.

Message: I got the reflexes up front too. nice and stable now, as where before my front tires would bounce off the ground goin over a trail of bumps. I put the sensatrack ones on the rear..I should have got the reflexes in the back but I bought the sensatrack before I knew about the reflexes. I've heard hit or miss stories about the IAT edlebrock shocks, I've never tried them myself. Someone on here a while ago posted that they had some coilovers for the rear, I'd really like to try those. I've also heard one dude said he put on dual shocks in the rear. He just used longer bolts and mounted one shock in the stock location and put the longer bolts thru and mounted the other shock right next to it with the same bolts. he said it worked out pretty good, and rode great but I dont know how secure that is.

Message: Thanks for your information on the shocks, this really helps. Hey Blakdak, are the Bilstein HD's significantly stiffer then stock, or just a little? Thanks.

Message: I don't believe they are much stiffer, but I do think they dampen significantly better. I remember driving down the highway when the truck was brand new with stockers and the rear end bounced all over the place on bumps. Not so anymore. If you're okay with the price, I'd recommend them.
I've driven this truck pretty hard over its first 60k miles with heavy loads and the front end probably loosed up some. After installing the shocks I wanted a little firmer, so I cranked the torsion bars a little and got about 1/2" of front lift. Seems to be better yet.
