Subject: Rear Brake Noise

Message:
I have a '93 4WD Dakota that has about 170,000 miles on it. I purchased it about 5 years ago and the rear brakes made noise. Turned out the shoes were falling apart. I replaced the drums and shoes. Was fine for a while, but then started making noise again, especially when its damp or cold out. So, I lived with it for a while but it got worse, so I took it to a shop and they said the parking brake was somewhat locked on. So, they put new shoes on again and redid the drums. Also left the parking brake disconnected. Was good for around a month and a half, but its back to making noise again. Anyone else had this issue? Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Adjust them.
There's a procedure for that.

My guess is weak springs on the self adjusters allowing the shoes to adjust more then normal causing excess drag. Replace the adjusters and springs. Also replace the springs between the shoes. they can be weak too. Not much else that can cause this problem

So many problems .... So little time

Thanks, but if my memory serves me correctly, I believe I replaced almost everything about the rear brakes when I did them myself. So, anything else that could cause the noise? The guy at the shop told me that sometimes Chrysler rear brakes always make noise and there is nothing that can be done.

Yeah, but you have to adjust them once in a while or they start squeaking.

Its not a squeaking sound though, it is an all out howling when coming to a stop. But, I may try adjusting them anyway.
