Message: Im getting some detonation when my engine is under a slight load, it runs great when on a flat road but when it tries an uphill climb I get the knock. I mentioned this to the dealer tech and he said that the V6 and V8 heads have problems with casting cracks and the heads will need to be replaced. A leak-down and compression test will confirm this.
Anyone else ever have to replace their heads?

Message: could be the plenum gasket in the intake leaking, look down the throttlebody and see if there is oil on the bottom

Message: RUN!! as fast as you can from that dealer! if you are running 87 octane try 89 and see if the pinging subsides. quite a few things can cause ping.
is the engine stock?

What engine you have? Mine (2000 4.7) would lightly ping under load until I moved to Florida. No ethanol down here. Could be as simple as "winter gas".

Message: Although not inpossible, I have never heard of anyone having head problems without severe overheating. RUN RUN RUN as fast as that Dakota will go away from that money grabing dealer. There are many things that can cause your problem. Plenum gasket is a logical one. cracked or disconnected vacumn hose is another. Has it always done this? Or is this a new problem. How about an O2 senser? Think it out logically. Try the higher octain fuel. If it stops, try the 87 at a differant station with differant brand. No mom and pop stuff and no discount stations. Cheaper gas means less additives at best. and even full price stations can use less additives to make more money. They can do this legally as the Government required standard amount of additives is far less then these new engines require. Did this start acting up as the weather got cooler. Might be the winter mix causing your knocking. It also lowers milage. Do all your home work prior to doing serious internal work you most likely do not need. Also you may have carbon buildup. Get some SEAFOAM and use as directed. Might need to use it twice. Good carbon remover.

Message: Well, I tried posting a full reply earlier today, don't know why it didn't show...
Anyway, this problem just showed up a couple weeks ago completely out of the blue, first thing I though was a bad tank of gas so I tried a higher octane, 91 for two tanks with no change. Turning off the OD during the grade climb helps a little but the problem is still there.
What would a leaking plenum do to cause detonation? Create a lean mixture?
When my cat failed in Apr I replaced it with a Maramont but the smog tests were excellent so I don't know if asensor is bad or not, how can I test it without paying through the nose?
I haven't done a compression test or leakdown test yet so I have no idea what that will show...
Any other details I can give you to help?

Message: No doubt it is a problem that just happened. check all the vacumn lines you can find.Take the air hat off and open the throttle plate so you can look at the bottom of your intake . use a small flashlight. If there is oil on the bottom, you can bet it's the plenum gasket. If nothing I would go the seafoam route. The idea is to eliminate all the easy things first.
