 Subject: Speedo and Tach Crazy

First of all I have a 1996 Dodge Dakota with the 318 Magnum. The gauges will be working fine and all of a sudden the tachometer and speedometer jump erratically, most of the time during acceleration. What can cause this? First time this has happened.

If your 96 has a speed sensor, that sounds like
it's the problem..
I'm not 100% sure the 96's used them yet but I'm
guessing it does.

Can that cause the tach to do that too? none of the rest of the gauges do it. went and got into it this morning and found a NEW problem......stays in 2nd gear ALL THE TIME from beginning to racing the engine down teh road at 60mph. tried flooring it a couple of times....no results. Shift cable is fine. Anything that can keep it in 2nd gear all the time? Any help would be appreciated.

BTW< yes it has a speedo sensor. It isn't a cable system because I have had the instrument cluster out before
