Subject: ABS, how to tell? IP: Logged
Message: ok, this maybe a really dumb question, but here it goes.
How can i tell if I have ABS (rear wheels only or 4 wheel)?
The O.M. states that if the ABS light lights up upon starting then the truck has 4 wheel ABS, otherwise it is rear wheel only.
I then believed that to be true, but as my friend pointed out while i was sliding a good distance one day, that my wheels were locking up, there was no ABS vibration, so i don't have ABS.
Is there an undeniable way to check (something located in the engine or underneath that would support what type (if any) ABS i have.

Message: you would have the abs module/ pump mounted underneath the brake master cylinder. my rear abs locks up once a day. the first time i apply the brakes from a cold start. after that it's fine.

Message: well, you can look on your front brake calipers and if there is a set of wires on there then you have ABS. There's probably a way to tell by lookin at your master cylinder and brake booster but I'm not sure, I don't have ABS...I like a challange :)

Message: The ABS light would be there if you had ABS at all.
As far as I know they do NOT put ABS on the front wheels of our trucks. At least up to 2003. Which is really stupid.

The EBC 125 (RWAL) system can be identified by the controller-antilock brake (CAB) and hydraulic control unit (HCU) being an integral electronic/ hydraulic unit. One 14 way connector and mounted near the master cylinder next to the Power Distribution Center (PDC).

Message: thanks for all the responses...its dark now, but ill look tom
for a general consensus i need to check again around my master cylinder. I know there there are these "lines" going into what look like solenoids, but of course it is not clearly labeled, and i don't have a service manual. Ill see if I can make something of it from this info
