Subject: airhat mod? IP: Logged
Message: has anyone ever thought of just cutting up their airhat to make it an open element? just cut around the area where the top and bottom seal around the filter...its a free mod so... its very tempting. sure it wouldnt look great, but i wouldnt care about looks.
would it work? would it be functional?

Message: Why not just do like we did when I was a kid...put a longer stud in and flip the lid over? Most motors of the 70s had extemely small "snorkels" that took air from under the hood. I am not sure how much you would benefit, but you could try.

Message: Yes! it does work I have done this on my Dakota, I had a K&N filter which made more power than stock but cutting the airhat made a much bigger difference. When I decided to cut the airhat it made a very noticeable difference in power and engine tone under power, and so long as you do a good job and repaint the fresh metal it looks fine as if it was supposed to be like that. and if you get a hood scoop and cut the hood over the airhat seal it up with some door seal and you got true functional ram-air with a good seal so it breathes only nice cool air

Message: What did you do with the PCV tube that is routed to the air filter housing? Also, be careful with cutting up the housing if you live in a state that performss smog inspections. That is why I suggested flipping the lid. It can easily be turned over for an inspection run.

Message: well in my state (kansas) ive never even heard of people getting tested. alot of people around here drive 1970's beaters that barely have an exhaust. anyway, i thought that pcv tube ran into the area thats inside the airfilter...
