All motor oils are made up of base oils and additives. In general, fully synthetic motor oils contain non-conventional, high-performance fluids. Semi-synthetic oils (also called "blends") usually use a small percentage of non-conventional, high-performance fluids in combination with conventional base oil.

What you read (and posted) is Mobil1 talking around the subject and neither admiting or denying that they MIGHT be lying to the public and committing fraud and/or deceit.

From what I've read, Mobil 1 has reformulated almost all of their oils and are using MOSTLY Group III base stock. Why? Because it's much cheaper?. Maybe that's part of the reason they are posting record profits.

RUMOR has it ... Mobil1 is now using Group III/IV/V blends in almost all of their oil formulations. They use a small amount of PAO so they can say "including polyalphaolefins (PAOs) which merely confuses the buying public.

For example, the new Mobil1 Extended Performance 5w-30 is MOSTLY Group III and some Group IV PAO.

Why would a consumer pay the higher price that Mobil1 charges for oils that are MOSTLY formulated with a cheaper Group III base stock (vs Amsoil which is a TRUE PAO SYNTHETIC?).

1) I have never called Mobil1 "crap", ... but does the company offer the BEST product and is the company honest?

2) Your "base oil" statement is false ... however, Amsoil owns NO refineries so we have to buy our base oils from 3rd parties who own refineries and blend it using our own proprietary formulations. (ExxonMobil might be one of those 3rd parties)

Todd, I too am confused. I have yet to see a statement from M1 specifically saying they use only group IV or group V base stocks.

Unfortunatly, the gov't allows the use of certain statements that are not exactly accurate. We know that "fat free" doesn't really mean fat free. I suspect "pure synthetic" does not actually mean what we think it does.

At my next oil change, I will not be using M1.

I just changed my oil in our Protege, and my beloved 4.7 Dak, with the MObil 1 I've been using for over 5 years.

DIDN'T M1 USED TO BE RED? Maybe I'm just seeing red, but I could swear it was red.

Now, and maybe it always was, it is a light amber, kinda like beer colored.

I sure hope the Super Syn, is Fully Synthetic as they say. The web site does mention their other 'blends', but insists the super syn is still fully synthetic.

I use mobil 1 EP. I drive each of my 2 rigs about 7,500 miles each per year and I do one oil change each per year in the spring. I plan to go with amsoil next change. Everything I can find from mobil/exxon talks around the issue. I believe this is from fear if the public learns the truth, if infact they did degrade there oils, The bottom well fall out of there sales. The one thing that I can't explain logicaly is the 15,000 mile drain advertized big time. But I also think almost any good grade of oil can do this with good filtering. I personaly know a guy that has driven over 70,000 miles on a new car that got one oil change at 2,000 miles to Walmarts cheapest oil. He changes the filter at about 15,000. His point is, he will only keep the car 5 years and trade it in and sees no reason to keep the engine in good condition for another owner. The point i'm making is any modern oil can do 7,500 miles plus with no problems. Mobil is/was a leader for many years but it now seems they have followed the pack and changed policy from being the best product to making the most money they can. There not going to get hurt as I see it. I'm willing to bet that less then 5% of the public knows or even cares as long as there car runs.

So many problems .... So little time

True that about the auto tranny fluid ;-)

I've had excellent results with M1. I'm sticking with it, the Super Syn, 10-30, for my mazda and Dak. Both have over 110,000 miles on them, no smoke, and NO oil use between changes Q 5-7K.

Gentlemen, decorum, please.

Mobil-1 is a fine motor oil. It, and other synthetic oils will improve performance and extend engine life.
The synthetic oils produced by all the refiners are, simply, superior to conventional oils produced by those same companies.

Amsoil oils are, demonstrably better than their synthetic oils.

My findings: over a two year period, 3 different samples (different viscosities), of Mobil1 EP showed the main base oil to be Group III basestock when analyzed with modern gas chromatograph equipment. The results were reviewed by third parties to confirm the results.

Furthermore, the foreign Mobil1 website clearly states that various grades of Mobil1 are Group III (Hydrocracked) / Group IV (PAO) blend.

My research determined that almost all of the Mobil1 and Mobil1 EP viscosities probably contain a significant amount of Group III basestocks.

The only Mobil1 motor oils that appear to be PAO and have not changed their formulation are Delvac1 diesel engine oil and the Mobil1 Motorcycle oil. All others are suspect.

for years! great oil and not a single engine problem
(2 trucks, 1 car) and many many 100's of thousand miles!!! just avoid fram oil filters

Regarding the oil test or the "INDEPENDENT STUDY!!!!!"

Was it a SCIENTIFIC test or some goofball?

I looked at the website and determined that it was B.S. It was some guy in his garage and there was no structure to the testing procedures.

Okay, here is a comparable "INDEPENDENT STUDY!!!!" for BEER ...

..... "TASTES GREAT?" .. or .. "LESS FILLING?"

I have heard so much about mobil 1 not being a true synthetic anymore decided to go to their website and check things out.learned they actually have three versions they call full syntetics. A truck and suv formula rated maxium drain interval in your owners manual. a regular synthetic rated at the same interval. and a super syn with 50 percent more super syn than the regular synthetic good for up to 15,000 miles.kinda confusing just wondering what the super syn is.anyway I think i will stick with mobil 1 I like to change my oil every 5000 miles anyway should be good enough for that.I don't trust going beyond 6000 miles.

I live in Texas not far from the refinery region. I read that Mobil's primary synthetic oil refinery in the gulf was damaged by hurricane katrina so they changed their oil formula to a fake synthetic while the facility was down. Once they realized the public would still buy M1 even though it was a fake synthetic, they decide to keep it that way because the profit margins are higher.

Ok, ok, I've seen all the arguments about which is better etc. you can say what ever you want about a product and people suck it up like a dry sponge. I am presently using AMZOIL 5W-30 in my DAK and am using Mobile 1 Extended in my Caravan. The best way to compare them both is to use them, or find someone that is comparing them. I stumbled on this website (http://neptune.spacebears.com/cars/stories/oil-life.html) which is presently using people to do the comparisons. My biggest worry about AMZOIL in the study is with it starting out as a 5W-30 and becoming 15W-40 by the 15k miles. In the studies the two oils work pretty close, but you have to read the articles and associated articles to get the whole point. I'm waiting impatiently to see what other tests show. In the mean time, I'm almost ready to change to M-1, because of the cost difference.

My plan is to switch to AMSOIL come spring when my oil changes are due unless Mobil 1 either proves it isn't using group lll or they change it back to real syn. so far I'm pretty convinced they have gone the cheap stuff route but with the high price. What does have me buffaloed is there 15,000 miles between oil changes. I would think the oil has to be able to do this safely or end up in a class action lawsuit. Now if this is true and I'm thinking it is, then all the other cheaper syn oils are just as good. For syn users, this boils down to going with the best price rather then quality which appears to no longer exists.
