Okay, First let me state that I am a certified mechanic.
I've been watching this thread for a few days for 2 reasons: a) because my wifes car has the same engine that was used in the Neptune Amsoil / Mobil1 test; and b) because I watched that test a long time ago (it's from 2002).
YEP, the test is outdated and all oil companies have reformulated their oils since 2002.
Let me tell you something. IMHO, there is something really wrong with that test.
#1. They used the wrong Amsoil in that engine. I've been using Amsoil Series 2000 0w-30 (vs them using the 5w-30) in my wifes car (same engine), testing it regularly, and have never seen an increse in viscosity.
#2. TBN is very important. It is not stressed in the report. As for TBN, Amsoil is top dog, with a TBN of at least 12 on their top oils. TBN is the Total Base Number. The higher the base, the more acid the oil can manage.
#3. What they do not conclude, and what they do conclude.
The TBN in the M1 seems to be pretty low compared to Amsoil, AND they do say that the Amsoil was better over all as far as insolubles found = better over all oil.
Amsoil reformulated its 5w-30 oils since that test and I have not seen any reports of viscosity increases since that date (and I see a lot of reports). I have had customers oils (Amsoil 5w-30) tested since that study was completed and the oils did not show a viscosity increase.
IMHO, Amsoil is the better over all oil.

IMO, this is a somewhat complicated oil. A lot of facters need to be considered.
First, people say, "I've used it for years without any problems". That may be true. But it's a new oil now. Just because it has the same label/name, doesn't mean it's the same oil.
Second, is it a bad oil? I think the answer is a definate "No". It's not bad and it will protect your engine well as long as you change it at regular intervals.
Third, Is it a true synthetic? The answer appears to be, "No, it is not." And there is the crux of the problem. Are you willing to pay synthetifc prices for a blend? I'm not.

SYNTHETICS ARE A WASTE OF MONEY.
Were synthetics around (on the shelf) when my dad got 230,000 miles on his 91 dakota, NO. There are plenty of over 100,000 mile vehicles out there that did not even use them. The fact is your average oil company makes better oils now then they did 5,10,20 years ago. Any newer model with a good engine will push 200,000 miles easily in the future WITHOUT the help of synthetics. So keep feeding these oil companies an extra 2.00 a quart for the SYN. It's only making us poorer and the rich richer. And believe all the tests and hype about SYNS, thats what keeps the economy rolling. Did I create controversy, did I cause some multibillionair oil companies to lose a little dough, sorry. Or am I stuffing some more cash in the consumers pocket.

Engines have changed. More power out of a smaller block and wedged into a tighter compartment. Synthetics are the only oils that provide the required protection. That's why many engines come synthetic factory fill.
