Subject: HEADLIGHT SWITCH! IP: Logged
Message: So let me start off by saying it's a 94 regular cab 4X4 v8 dakota. Here's my problem, ever since I bought the truck three years ago I go through one headlight switch a year. The lights stop working and I replace the switch, and then some months later the same stuff happens. What's the problem here?
Thanks

Message: My guess is that your headlamps are drawing more current than the switch can handle.
Are the headlamps stock, or have you put in higher wattage units?

Message: Well, the units themselves are stock, but all of the wiring from the headlights to the firewall looks newer. But the wiring looks very professional. Is there any way I can change from the stock switch to just a on/off flip switch?

Message: Consider having your headlight switch just activate a relay that then applies power to the bulbs.
Read this and you'll see. Excellent article that includes wiring diagrams.

Message: Isn't that what the stock switch does ? Maybe whover rewired it eliminated the relay ? Sounds like it might not be so professional after all...

Message: So, sounds like I should just carry around a extra headlight switch in the truck then...

Message: No, you should see that it is wired correctly with a relay.

Message: Do you know where this relay would be located? It's not one of the relays in the knee panel on the drivers side is it?

Message: Loose wire or bad connection on switch will also cause switch to burn up.Check connectors for burned or discolored places. If discolored, replace connectors when you replace switch.

Message: Yeah as a matter of fact the green wire is real burnt. The guy that owned the truck before me had fog lights sliced into the connector. Where would I get a connector?
