Subject: Brake Pad Swap ?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 2004 dakota SXT. The front rotors warped at 20,000. I replaced them with standard replacements from Advanced Auto Parts and bought the cheapest brake pads they sold. I'm currently at 40,000, and am wanting to change pads to ceramic pads. The squealing is driving me crazy. In the 20,000 miles that I've had them on, I've taken them apart twice used grease once and another brake quiet product on the backs, however they still scream. They only scream at a certain braking pressure though!?!? I was wondering if I should switch to ceramic, and in doing so, would I need to have the rotors turned?

The usual recommendation is that the rotors be torned whenever the pads are replaced.
You should always have the rotors turned if you're changing to a different type of pad material.

With all due respect, I disagree with both of you. Unless your having problems with the rotors or they have gouges wore in them (light scracth looking surface is normal) There just fine. Take wet/dry sand paper and go over them to give a good break in surface. In reality they only have 20,000 on them and should be like new. I also did mine at 20,000 and keep the factory pads. At 70,000 there still there and no squeel. I used NAPA rotors. There best ones. Also my pads are still better then half there. You still got the factory pads? Are they looking good? It's worth the try before buying new ones. Otherwise I would go with NAPA pads and there sujestion as to which ones squeel the least. Parts men get a lot of feedback and brakes are a big seller. They will have a good answer for you. Forget the parts stores. They change help like you change cloths.

So many problems .... So little time

I don't have the factory pads anymore. And when I took them back apart (both times) I did rescuff them with sandpaper, and they still squeel like crazy!

I was talking about sanding the rotors some on both sides. Just to help your new pads wear in a bit. Again, I'm talking about the new pads your about to buy.

Did you use brake quite compound on the back of the pads? I use Permatex brake quite that comes in a spray can, only takes a few light coats and then let the stuff dry 15-30 minutes before re-installing the pads, works pretty good.

I used Wagner ThermoQuite pads on my 03 and they are quite, not a peep from the brakes in 50K. I ordered them from rockauto.com for about $40, money well spent.

I agree on the Napa rotors, not just rotors but parts in general. I've stopped using Advance because they are selling junk, it's cheaper but you'll be back quicker to buy another. Plus my local Napa (probably yours does too) pays thier guys good money so they stay put, one guy's been there 30 years or more. I'd rather deal with them than a 19 year old looking up stuff in a computer, asking me if it has air when I'm looking for a set of brake pads.

Brakes squeal because the pad vibrates in the caliper. You have to clean the back of the pad and the caliper mounting point well. I use a wire brush and some brake parts cleaner. Then apply something like Permatex Disc Brake Quiet - that blue goo. Then let it sit over night before driving. That has never failed to work for me on any vehicle.

Ceramic pads also vibrate and sqeal. But they do it at such a high frequency we can't hear it. SO we don't complain to the dealer or repair shop. That's their only advantage. They don't work or last any better than any other comperable pad. They are not intended for real performance use. Many of them are not recommended for heavy duty and towing use. Select them very carefully. Personally, I prefer Hawk pads, no-ceramic.

You have to resurface the rotors with new pads; but you don't have to cut them. During use, some pad material is deposited on the rotors. You have to remove most of that, and prep the surface to accept the new pads. I use 130 grit sand paper in a drill motor. If you see an outline of the pad on the rotor that won't sand off, replace the rotor.

Before you replace a warped rotor, check it very carefully with a dial indicator for run out. Do not simply mic it out, that doesn't tell you what you need to know. Check for run out at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock to make sure the spindle is not bent.
