Message: There are many scantools out there.
Which one you need depends on your particular requirements, and how much you're willing to spend.

and many more.
For the ultimate, and if money is really no object, you can buy, for your very own, the scanner the Dodge service techs use (unless you have a 2005 or newer):

Message: I guess it depends on how much you want to spend. I have a Autoxray 6000. I purchased it off ebay at around 350.00. Autoxray has come out with a new line of scanners called the code scout. The code scout 2500 can be had for 160.00. Go to ebay and type
in Autoxray and check it out.

Message: I have the autoxray. It comes with 5 differant connecters. Will scan OBD I and II plus the cars/trucks that you normally can not plug in to. I'm very pleased with it. Last time I used it wsa on my Dakota. I had an intermitant miss. Said it was #7 plug wire and that's exactly what it was. Now Without it I would have not checked wires till a last resort. They were quality wires and only 2 months old. It's in the shop and I had a hard day. Can't recall the model # but shouldn't be all that hard to find it on the net.
So many problems .... So little time

Message: Be carefull in your choice of scanners. If your Dak is a newer model, it uses the CAN protocol instead of OBDII. I think CAN started in 2005 for the Dakotas, and 2003 or 2004 for the Durango.

Message: code reader or scanner? You can get code reades for < $40 but code readers are the ticket. Several here have recommended the autoxray from what I've read. The actron scanner (big kit, can't recall number) that includes all the cables for most vehicles (some old like ford/chrysler not included) is around $400 but will only read emissions sensors and a couple others, certainly not all.
if you have the cash and want top-of-the-line, go all out and get mac tools or equivalent. That's the ones shops use from what I've seen.
