Message: Don't do it. Way too much work and money, with dubious results. You'll have a tough time selling it, too.
Instead, beef up the 4 cyl. It will be cheaper and more fun.

Message: Why do you say that boB ? I think it's the 4 cylinder Dak that would be just about impossible to sell in the hilly area where I live, I've never even seen one. I had a new '85 van with the slant six that was so underpowered that it could only pull 2nd gear with a standard on an uphill highway run loaded (not overloaded) with some of my tools. Traffic blowing by me at 50 mph, some packages just shouldn't even be sold for work or in hilly areas. The v-8 Daks are quite popular here.
magyar0_2 - what year ? Many have swapped from v6 to v8 here, easier in the newer trucks, there is room for the fan in front of the v8 in all but fiirst generation trucks, and I think those can be done with an electric fan. He'll need to replace motor, transmission, PCM, injector wiring, and probably the driveshaft. Haven't done this myself, but others have. I couldn't live with the 4 cylinder myself. With gas prices what they are though, he might do as well trying to trade it for a v8 though, and save all that work...

Message: The truck is a 97. it is in utah, so it's relatively hilly. He thought about swapping the 4 cylinder for a V6, but thought if he is changing the engine anyway, he might as well try a V8. I know about people changing a dakota v6 to a V8, but thought I might get a little more information on changing a 4 to a 6.
It might be an option for me to change my V6 to a V8 and give him my old V6.

Message: the cheapest way to do this would be to find a donor truck(preferably same yr or close) with the drivetrain you want. find a totaled truck with(hopefully) low mileage and you can yank the drivetrain, wiring harness, tranny and anything else needed in one deal.
since his truck is a '97, anything from '97 to '04 will swap easily.

Message: OK, I'm a little hazy as to why people don't just get a Dak with a v-8 to begin with instead of going through all the hassle for an engine swap? The difference in price for a V-8 Dak vs a 4 cyl can't be that much. It's gotta be a way lot less than the price of an engine swap. Someone, please clue me in. Have I watched "Clueless" one to many times??

Message: It is very possible. My friend did it with a V6 and they are the same as the V8s. Prepare on changing out the dash wiring harness too. Everything all bolts in the same location, motor mounts are in the same location and along with the transmission mounts. Not that bad of a swap. If you have time you could do it and have it running within a weeks time.
