It's not on any of my Dodges, but I thought I'd revel in a Toyota problem for all those that swear Toyota's *never* have a problem. So much for Japanese superiority. :-O

In today's mail I got a notice regarding a class action lawsuit against Toyota Motors for an "oil gel" problem that potentially affects a number of 1997-2002 models, of which my Avalon is one of them.

I've never seen any signs of this "gel" (sludge by the right name). I just thought this was fun to pass along...

What's your left foot doing?

toyotas aren't as stout as people think. but my first choice when looking at vehicles was toyota and dodge. got the toyota first and had to get rid of it before the motor blow. than i got the dodge. I would say the drive train in the dodge is more reliable than the toyotas.

DC also has the same problem with one of its
V6 engine cars. Something about too small oil
passage ways causing sludge build up.

DC saying it's not *their* problem! What did you
expect DC to say; "yes we f$cked up" dah

At least Toyota was shamed into admitting and addressing their problem. My 2000 Durango 4.7 has 74000 miles on it and is getting a new motor next week.Dealer dropped the pan(no sludge) and put in a new oil pump which didn't fix the presure problem. Dont come back saying it wasn't maintained because it was. Every company has bad products what seperates them is how they deal with them. The answer i got from Chrysler was T.S. not our problem. I've been driving Mopars since i was 16 my Durango is the last one. Not because of what happened but because of how it was handled.

To bad you just missed the warranty! There shouldn't be a sludge build up problem in those 4.7 engines (except in the filler neck in the winter). However, if you always used cheapy oil and did a lot of city driving in cold weather and the engine never got a chance to warm up and clean itself out, that may have caused your sludge problem. I run Mobil 1 in my 4.7 and have 140K KM's (88K miles) but it's mostly highway driving so my engine is pretty clean and I have no oil pressure problems.

Camry 4cyl . 1997-2001
Camry 6cyl . 1997-2002
Solara 4cyl . 1999-2001
Solara 6cyl . 1999-2002
Sienna 6cyl . 1998-2002
Avalon 6cyl . 1997-2002
Celica 4cyl . 1997-1999
Highlander 6cyl . 2001-2002
ES300 . 1997-2002
RX300 . 1999-2002

The "funny" thing is: the settlement provides for an 8 year, unlimited mileage warranty for the problem from the date of first sale or lease. Even if my Avalon develops the problem I'm past the term. It would only have helped had I experienced the issue and paid to have it repaired (before the 8 year term). Then I could get reimbursed...

Yup - the engine you are referring to is the 2.7L V6, not the 3.7L.
