Subject: antifreeze smell IP: Logged
Message: sometimes i can smell antifreeze in my dakota, its not very strong though. floor is dry, no leaks inside or out, no fogged up windows like a bad core, have NOT had to add any fluid at all.the only thing i have noticed is the temp gauge is almost dead center, use to stay on cool side of center.....wondering if its going to do the "mount st.helens" on me and blow all to hell?? 2001, 4.7l, auto....thanks

Message: Sounds like you have a small hole in a water line that's venting when pressure builds. Once it vents, it evaporates quickly, so you have to look for it when up to operating temp.

Message: I had that problem for quite some time. I finally got some water on the floorboard indicating a bad heater core. I have a '97, but it should be the same for you.
The heater box has a drain that dumps leaking antifreeze into the engine bay. In my case, it ended up on the exhaust. The smells from the engine bay easily filter into the truck. Because of this drain, you may never get antifreeze on the floorboard. Actually, I the way its set up, I dont understand how it does get on the floor.
Take a look in your engine bay, on the firewall. The drain is located behind the passanger side cylider head. See if its wet.

Message: check around the water pump. It may have a leak and drip onto the cross member or something and not on the floor. Could also be a bad radiator cap that vents steam and smell. Is the overfill tank, where coolant goes if overheated, empty?
