Subject: ram axle problem IP: Logged
Message: i took apart the front of my dads ram today to replce the u-joints in the axle. its got that power lock crap axle deal were the passenger side axle is split and it locks with a vacum type actuator or somthin. well there is a little ring with teeth that slides on to the intermediate shaft so i can then put the axle back in. im tryin to set that ring back onto the intermediate shaft but it wont go. i also tried to take off the vacum pump deal but i broke 2 out of the four bolts so i dont want to break the rest. what can i do to get that ring back on there
any help is appreciated. im just hoping someone know whats the hell im talkin about since this is the dak forum not a ram forum

Message: It should slip onto the splin easy. My money says that paticular one has either an off set splin that needs to be in the exact position or a thicker splin in one or 2 places. Turn it around and try again. Look at it close. You should be able to see a differance of some kind. The bolts you broke off might be tricky. The axle housing well be maybe 3/8 thick at the most. It also may be an open hole going all the way through. For this reason YOU MUST use left handed drill bits or risk turning the busted bolt right into the inside. Big job then. Using a left handed bit that just fits the bolt hole on the vacumn unit, put a nice dimple in the busted bolt. Then use a left handed bit 1/2 the size of the one you just used. Then go bigger to about 3/4 the size. If the bolt hasnt backed out by now, use a square easyout being carefull to only tap it into the busted bolt so you don't expand it making it tighter. You may need to remove the unit after dimpling the 2 busted bolts. If all 4 bolts break off, complete the first 3. put the unit on. Then dimple that last bolt. use a quality easyout so you don't bust it off. Also use heavy grease on your bits to catch the shavings so they don't go into the axle. housing.
So many problems .... So little time
