Subject: Just thought I'd ask IP: Logged
Message: 1989 Dakota six-cyclinder. Just thought I'd ask before I open the hood and start on it. Truck broke down with a distributor pick-up assembly code. Replaced pick-up with new one. Cleared codes. Truck works. 1000 miles later. Misfire and progressively worsens till I drive a distance of 3+ miles and park it. Eventually misfire gets so bad won't start where it is parked. Check codes. Same pick-up assembly code in the computer again. Throw in the old pick-up assembly just for kicks and now truck starts up. Clear computer codes again. Misfire is still there. But truck works now.? Any ideas?
I just bought plug wires to see if that fixes it. Wanted to post this just in case the wires don't fix the misfire problem. Any advise is much appreciated. This is a work truck and has a purpose for me. Paying rent. Thanks for your consideration.

Message: do spark plugs too, or pull them out check the gap and make sure there free of oil/carbon and make sure the gap is correct. the gap for the plugs is probably .035" or .040"
also make sure the timing is right.

Message: Well, threw in the new wire set. No difference. Almost if misfire is more apparent now but can't vouch for that.
toolfan,
cool. I'll check the plugs themselves. Also, I used a timing light when I first got the code and installed a new distributor. I'll check to see if something is faulty there and check timing. Thanks for advice.
I'll post more if no luck.
