Subject: No power streering at low rpm IP: Logged
Message: So last night I developed a power streering issue where the power is gone/low below 2500rpm.
Anyone have this issue before?
The fluid is topped up (I did have a slow leak for the last year that I plugged with some leak stop fluid) and earlier in the week the belt was making a quick squeak on start up (it happened 3 or 4 times but I hadnt started the truck in two weeks as I was getting the rear diff rebuilt)
01 QC 4.7L 4wd.

Message: You already have the answer, you just don't know it yet.
When you used the stop-leak fluid, over time, it plugged more than just the leak.
What you call "belt squeal" was probably steering pump noise from starting up a hydraulic pump that no longer has the required internal clearances.

Message: Manny hit it right on. Sorry to say, you converted your leak into a major problem.

Message: Leakstop fluids plug small holes, gaps, orifices, and clearances, basically anything smaller than the maximum hole size the fluid is designed to plug.
If you find you have a leak in a hydraulic system like steering/brake/oil/transmission, don't use those leakstop fluids. Track down the leak and fix it right.

Message: Those stop leak products are bad. I think the makers of that stuff and the people making parts are tied together. I am the lead tech at my shop and I see radiators, trans coolers, ps pumps, heck if they make a stop leak for it I have replaced it because of the stop leak and then more parts on top of that. I will never understand the radiator stop leak, if it can stop up a small hole in the radiator what about the small holes in the water jacket that the water travels through. all stop leaks are bad.

Message: This morning the power steering seams to have come back to life at low rpms which is a good sign. Now to drain it of the leak stop and see what happens.

Message: Drain as much as you can out of the system and put in some fresh ATF+4, or whatever is recommended for your year. After a day or so of normal driving around, drain it all again and refill with more fresh fluid. That should get most of the crap out.
Be meticulous. Make sure any connections you take apart are clean, clean, clean before you put them back together so you won't get dirt in the system or have any new leaks.
Good luck.

Message: Wonder if some seafoam mixed with the first refill would do anything???? I don't recall ever having a reason to clean a pump system.

Message: What is seafoam?
Does it make good hydraulic fluid?
Will it froth and foam and cause more problems?
Can it handle heat as well as the power steering fluid, or will it break down into something that will make his problem worse than it is?
When in doubt...don't.
