Subject: sound from engine IP: Logged
Message: i just recently purchased a 97 dakota 5-speed 4 cylinder and i just started hearing a noise coming from the engine. for the most part, i only hear it when i first start up the truck and when i go to shift and push in the clutch. from what i have read from other posts, it sounds like maybe a piston knock. but im not sure. it just sounds like a tapping or ticking sound. if this is piston knock, how is this fixed or is there anything else it could be? any help would be appreciated.

Message: It could be lifters. I know that in the V6s they are bad about having tapping lifters. To tell if it is lifters or connecting rods. Start it up and rev it up, if the noise gets quiter it is the lifters and it is gets louder it is probably a connecting rod. Also, could be a throw out bearing. If the sound goes away when you push in the clutch or when you rev it up and it doesnt quiet down or get louder then that is a probable cause.
