Message: Ken - pinging is more common in drive than revese or neutral, since it can depend on how much load is on the engine. More load going up hills or higher speeds.

Message: Oh, Ok. Well, I will definitely check out that higher gas and see what that does. But still, it doesn't do it as much in the colder weather. Is that still part of "pinging"?

Message: ok, here's another thought. I had some gears break in my rear end and it made a noise that I only heard in drive, not neutral. If gears can break in the rear end under normal driving, they can break in the front dif too. Not to mention that my driveshft broke off the 1st two weeks I had my R/T. Spirit is willing but the parts are weak I think.

Message: Ok, I put in a fuel additive that has a little cleaner in it. It said it bumped the octane rating up like 15 points, I don't think it was that much though. I drove around for about 3 to 4 days with that in the tank and I didn't hear anything. BUT, it was cold, I don't know if the cold had anything to do with it, but I didn't hear anything. Now that that has run completely through my system, it warmed up outside to the low 70s, and I started hearing it again, but that was after the additive was gone. So I don't know if it helped or not.

Message: OK. But did you try a higher octane fuel?
Not additives, Ken. I mean actually put higher octane gas in your tank, all by itself with no additives, to see if that makes your symptoms go away.

Message: Sounds like Pinging under a load.
Also. How about a slight EXHAUST LEAK. Either at the head or from the manifold to the downpipe donut gasket.
That will get louder under load and almost go away completely when not under much load depending on how big the leak is.

Message: Ken - I think you might want to doble check the label on that fuel additive - most only raise octane by about a point; and many don't realize that means only one tenth of one octane rating. Why not try the higher octane fuel ?

Message: Yeah, I don't know how accurate that octane additive is, I just put 93 in my tank today, and going to see how it is. I didn't have much in my tank when I filled it back up, but from driving about 20-30 miles today already, I didn't notice any noise. I should've just tried the higher octane fuel in the first place, but I wanted to see if an additive would help at all. Thanks for all the help everyone is giving me.

Message: Take a look at your exhaust from front to back and see if it close to anything, like your crossmember for your trans. check your motor and trans mounts if one is bad it could let the exhaust rest against the crossmember. I have a 93 5.2 that does the same thing just don't have the cash to fix it right now.. Goodluck.

Message: After the engine has run for 2 days off of Premium, it's running like a champ. I don't hear any ping or any noise except the noise of something rattling right under my air intake on the top, center of the engine. If anyone has had this same problem, how is fixed, I can't figure out what it is. Whenever I take off the round plastic part of the air intake, I move it back and forth and something rattles, but can't see anything that is moving. What could this possibly be?
I think the premium gas solved the ping problem. Now I just need to test it in warmer weather.
Thanks for all the help and advice!
