Subject: Popping noise in front end while reversi IP: Logged
Message: ng....
I've noticed lately, while backing into a parking spot ( in garage and at work ) I hear a loud pop while manuvering my steering wheel. It's a 4wd...what comes to mind for you guys? Got 107k miles and replaced ball joints...

Message: From what I understand, it could be, in decreasing order of likelihood:
1. ball joints (I guess these are ruled out for you)
2. tie rods
3. idler and pitman arms
4. ??
I have my own pop that comes from the front right-hand side when making left turns [99 Dakota club cab 4x4]. I replaced the tie rods on both sides (inner and outer) just last weekend, and the ball joints were replaced with quality aftermarket parts last year. The pop is still there, so I'm going to replace my idler arm soon and hope that fixes it.
I'd like to hear other peoples' thoughts on this in case I'm way off base or missing something.

Message: The front sway bar can also pop if the bushing are worn out.

Message: Well, like you said Rick...ball joints are probably out but since they are a recall replacement who knows. Only about 10k miles on them...
Tie rods are brand new because I replaced my rack n pinion...which also rules out a pitman arm issue since it doesn't have one like your '99.
Anthony, I actually posted a question about bushing size for the sway bar because I plan on replacing them in a week or so. I'm hoping that will fix it...the front end has been feeling pretty loose lately. I'm going to take the wheel off and see if I can spot any play in there...

Message: when i replace the tie rods and have to use a puller or pickle fork to pop the ends off, do i use some sort of press to put the new ones on? or just torque the castle nut to spec and that will be enough?

Message: Tonite I replaced the idler arm, and the clunk is still there. Next on the list I suppose are the sway (stabilizer) bar bushings. Is it possible that the right-hand shock has gone bad, or that there's a problem with the right-hand torsion bar?

Message: I own a 93 and when i bought it, it had been sitting for 7 or 8 yrs. i replaced everything under the frontend. It still pops when i back up. its aggrivating. makes it worse cuz i am a auto tech. my boss and i drove it the other day to listen to it and we cant find it. the only thing i can think of is the rubber pieces between the coil springs and upper mount are gone. i put new springs in but the rubber was wore out. that might be it, not sure. i gonna put new rubber in next week and if the noise leaves i will lit you know.

Message: Rick,
Also check your shocks mounting bolts if they are loose they can make popping sounds. Don't forget to check the sway bar. Tighten up the bolts just to make sure.

Message: I recall an article I read about popping sounds when making turns up a driveway or something. It had to do with Cab Pop, if i recall. Something about a cab mount popping sound during a turn. mine does it if I make a hard right turn up an incline driveway, but if I make a diagonal turn up the same driveway instead or a straight turn it won't pop. Don't get it during left turns, only right hand turns and it has to have a bit of an incline too. I guess the incline puts stress on the cab/frame mount on the right side or something.
