Message: My o1, Quad cab, 4.7, MANUAL Tranny, yadda, yadda,
with trailer towing, tire and handling, (also comes with 11in rear drums)
I DO downshift- alittle on average stops- alittle
I DO use the parking brake- keeps the rear drums adjusted (very important)
I have over 116,000 miles ORIGINAL rotors, pads, everything!
I'm pretty sure that, usuing the parking brake, is the key to this, along with the 11in drums, keeps the rears working well, and takes the load off the front brakes.
They still stop well, no warning pad squeel, etc.
ORIGINAL Brakes!
So many posts about warped rotors, etc.
I also don't wait to the last possible second, to apply the brakes to slow down for a light, etc.
NO one glides anymore!

116,000 miles is truely impressive. You are doing something right.

Message: My QC is just a little shy of 70K. No braking issues whatsoever. Quite often when I get the tires rotated my tire guy asks me, "hey John, are you ever going to use the brakes on this truck?"
I suspect I'll changed them at some high mileage mark. Let's see who can set the record! :-)

Message: Thanks for the replies,
I am wery happy with the brakes. I often get my tires balanced and rotated, at Discount Tire- lifetime contract, and I look at the pads on front and they still look good.
In the past I have had build up on the rotors, and a lightly pulsating pedal, but that always quits usualy that day, and is rare.
Coasting is a lost art. But it sure saves some $ on mpg.

Yes, still the original clutch,
my 4.7 puts out over 360 ft lbs of torque at the crank.
I'm also glad to see others are getting good mileage out of their brakes also. So many negative posts, cause most people don't.
I really believe the parking brake use, keeping the rear drums in adjustment, has alot to do with it.
And, letting the compression do some of the braking by coasting in gear briefly.

Message: On my 04 Quad CAb 4x4 auto with 4 wheel disks, My first set of front rotors went at 7800 miles. This was with 2000 miles worth of all highway road trips and a little over 5000 miles of jumping on the highway to go to work. Barely used the brakes. That first 8000 miles was the least amount of in-town driving I have ever done on this truck and it fried my rotors somehow.
Second set of front rotors went on and then caused another steering wheel vibration at 12,500 miles. The problem would noticably deteriorate after one single panic stop. It was minor at first and I just decided to tolerate it and drive normally since going easy on it didn't seem to do me any good. By 45000 miles the whole truck vibrated violently even with moderately firm braking from 45-50 mph. At 45000 miles the front rotors and pads were replaced with raybestos rotors and Bendix Titaniummetallic II pads. This is the best the truck has ever felt in braking since I've owned it. I can actually hit them hard every now and then and then drive away and the brakes still feel exactly the same with no new vibration popping up.
Dodge rotors suck, the pads are OK. I was actually conditioned for awhile to think a little steering wheel vibration in braking is a normal thing. Now I realize it's not but I think alot of Dakota owners have gotten so used to it that they don't realize it means there's a problem.

My brakes are original at 60K with very little occasional pulsations.

Message: eddy and Armin,
Thats good to know about your 04. Actually, my 01 QC, has rarely ever had a steering wheel vibration while braking. It certainly doesn't now.
And I totally agree with you that it is NOT normal, and shouldn't happen.
Armin,
I'm actually not that esy on my equipment. Every so often, I do full Hole shots, dumping the clutch and white smoking my tires (LSD differential), and get a a nasty, posi second gear burnout at about 25-30mph gear as well. All while doing a 1/4 run. G tech Pro best so far is 15.6secs.
But it is a QC, and thats only every now tnd then.
I pull my catamaran sailboat (hence my e-mail screenname ToddSails) often, it has no trailer brakes either.

Message: EDDY is right on. Factory rotors are junk for the most part. The metal is really inconsistant in quality. The real reason some can worp in 5000 miles and some over 100,000. Mine went at about 10,000 and I lived with it till 20,000. Big mistake maybe. There warrented for 10,000. I installed NAPA's best rotors, Jober price, $57.00 each as I recall. I Keep the factory pads And at just over 70,000 there still there and have over 50% wear left. I'm also easy on brakes and They are working perfect. In my mind, there is a combination involved in getting long life out of brakes and cluches too. Using good products and using these parts reasonably. It's when guys start thinking they paid a good price for there rig so it should take anything they choose to dish out to it. Well, that's a choice and it's the choice that can get expensive. Speed/abuse costs money period.

Message: BigBen,
Reason I asked is to know if it is just the miles or; does it smoke, use gallons of oil, get uless than 10 MPG, shimmy and rattle? Does the radio and cruise control and wipers work? Won't it stay in gear?
You know, stuff like that.
Why do I ask? I routinely pass that mileage.

The reason why is becuase I need something thats not almost worn out. Yes, it needs Balljoints, brakes,Exaust, oilseals, rebuilt tranny (46RE) and it gets roughly 16 MP
Also I'm looking for something that gets better fuel millage. At least 20 something. Because I know that when the GOP get put back in office then fuel prices might just go back up to almost 3 per gallon(I'm a Independent). I think both parties are guilty of the huge debt we got over are heads.
I'm feel older than I really am.(mid 20's). So there for I might just buy a Black Crown Vic. The LX Sport dosn't look too bad. Might just install a hyperchip when I get it.
Also the Chevy Colorado sips fuel so who knows. I might think about it.

The GOP is in office now, gas prices have fallen to what they were almost a year ago. It's not the GOP's doing for high pump prices: go look at the Arabs and the oil refiners for the cause. Quit whining about something that isn't real.
All vehicles require maintenance and repair over the course of their service. Some need more than others need. They all consume distilled dinosours, some faster than others... If you want one that gets better than 16MPG, good for you - get one. Just don't pin the "blame" on your government for the expense you incur when driving your low MPG truck.
BTW --> I think 16MPG out of these trucks is a good thing. For what they are and can do that is actually pretty good.
