Subject: 4.7L tranny question IP: Logged
Message: Well, I'm due to change the tranny fluid/filter for the first time in my 2000 Sport w/4.7L.
Does anyone know the torque specs for the pan bolts?
I couldn't find the fluid capacity in the owner's manual, either. Any ideas?
Anything else I need to be carefull with?
TIA,
Pete

Message: According to the 2000 factory service manual, the capacity is "approximately 14 quarts." The torque specs follow.
primary filter: 40 in. lbs.
cooler return filter: 125 in. lbs.
pan: 105 in. lbs.
The manual also says to use RTV sealant on the trasmission case sealing surface before installing the pan. I'm assuming that the inch pound specs can be translated into foot pounds by dividing the figure by 12. If that's true the primary filter, cooler return filter, and pan would have specs of 3.3 ft lbs, 10.4 ft lbs, and 8.75 ft lbs.

Message: You will need a max of 8 quarts, probably only seven to change out the fluid. The 14 quarts includes the TQ Conv, which will not drain. Unless you go somewhere where they do a fluid exchange you will not change more than about 1/2 of the fluid at a time (that's what I do).
