Now, if somebody made a manual front hub conversion kit for the 4x4....

Message: That was done years ago for quarter mile racing. CLutch in for the start, then no clutch with each upshift of the manual valve body. It was very effective.
To do that on a street car would be pretty harsh. You have to have a full manual valve body, or each up and down shift would be so harsh as to be intolerable; bad ride, bad perforamnce, and incredibal wear and tear on the rest of the driveline.
Just slip it in to Neutral and rev it up. That's free, and won't beat you up.

Even tractors have that, called a powershift, you can even put it in first without the clutch....no torque converter

Message: Mopar had a Trany that had a cluch and torque converter combined mated to a standard 3 speed. But if you left it in high gear, it started out in that gear . making it very gutless. but you could shift it to low or second and still be automatic. reguardless, you had to use the cluch pedal to shift to other gears. I had a couple of these in the crysler car . they was gutless but also tuff in my mind. Although the engines only put out just over 100 HP. except for the V8 hemi. This was late 40's to somewhere in the 50's. I'm thinking it was called a torque flight but I may be mixed up there.

Message: If revving the engine at a stoplight is all that important to you, just put the thing in neutral.
DakDick's method won't work if somebody's behind you.
I remember the Volkswagon one.

Aside form that. I've been tempted a few times to put a floor shifter in my Dak and take off the column shifter. I'd even machine in the O/D button to the side of the floor shifter "T Handle".

Message: it is strange.we live in different automotive world. Here in Europe we have allready quite popular Porsche inventory named "tiptronic".
In automatic tranny stick there is position which allows you to engage gears manually at desired revs without clutch pedal. It is used quite commonly by now in upper class cars.

so happened to look at a 41 Dodge that has the
very same set up as you discribed. You could
even take off in third gear if you wanted to.

Message: How do the new ones work? Are they automatics with the ability to manually shift?
The magnum is an auto stick, in drive you can slap the shifter to or away to upshift or downshift.
By the way the tranny in the mag is a benz creation.

Message: RadioMan..... Your exactly right . Torque flight I believe is what replaced that . like I said . I owned a couple of those long ago and yes you could start out in any gear and high gear was very slugish lol . But there was one terrific advantage to this setup. Icy town driving. For bad drivers it was a great way to get traction if they were smart enough to start in high gear.
