I have a 99 dak ext and my clear coat is coming off horribly, i bought it a few months ago and it was like this but it is just driving me nuts. It is white all around the clearcoat do to it coming up. Is there a way to remove this clear coat and spray a quick clear coat over it until i get it painted. By the way does anyone do paint in the chicagoland area? Good work reasonable prices? Please let me know.
Thanks to everyone
Tom

Has this truck been wrecked at one time... Look real close. reguardless, it may be a poor quality repainted truck. Anything is possible but I have yet to see a 99 Dakota with bad factory paint. Mine is a 99 also

You know i thought that also but it looks original checked all seams inside engine bay everything looks kosher just cant figure it out. I am getting the feeling that the guy who had it before me either put some really bad solution on it to wash it with like acetone lol, but i just dont know. could be he used a high pressure washer but the undercoat is still in tact all the way around. any ideas?

I've watched a lot of R/T's go thru e-bay and quite a few of them have a problem with the clear coat peeling off - especially the ones from the south. I have a 2000 R/T and, so far, so good. I'm not sure about what to do. It seems to me that, if the color is still good, you could lightly sand off the clear coat and re-coat with new clear coat. Would be a temorary fix, though. Be careful not to get something that could react with the original paint.

If the clear coat has been off for a spell, the paint will be oxidized in those areas. There is a product called "color back". Comes in a red pint can. I have used this stuff on some god awfull oxidized paint and it comes back like new. Really amazing but it does take some elbow grease . My best experiance was a 76 toyota truck. Yellow. this was the sickest looking truck I ever seen but it run great. I bought it for 400 buck. All I did was use this "color back" on it and cleaned the motor and cab interior. Took 2 days and I sold it for 3,600. Not a bad profit. I just gave a friend with a black 98 durango the last of it that I still had. His hood was a mess. color coat pealing bad and those areas were showing bad oxidation. We tried a spot on it and it looked just like new. I'm thinking this stuff was either Dupont or 3M . It's not coming to mind.

Welcome to Dodge

The clearcoat issue has been going on for some time. I read here that its almost like they used decent paint on all parts of the trucks except the roof...and mine is also suffering.

I have seen several posts here on DodgeDakotas.com before about this issue.

Popular belief is that Dodge used crappier paint on the roofs to save $ and while I am sure it paid off on their end, it only costs us money to have it fixed.

Its ridiculous! The hood and roof are horrible. Anyone know what a decent paint job would run me? Nothing great just something to last a couple of years. I hear maaco sucks the big one.

Maaco is for your beater car for a crappy paint job. Its like 200 bucks, a decent paint job will easily cost you over 2k.

go to your nearest 5-star dealer, tell em the clearcoat looks to be defective and you heard there was might be a 10 year paint warranty for it, and you want to know what they or DC can do to help you out with it. they'll either laugh at you, or like in my case they'll split the cost of the repaint with you.

as long as you can handle the potential laughing, it wont hurt to try, right?

My 1999 Dakota is the same way. The clear coat is peeling on the roof and the top of the drivers side fender.

The spots really aren't all that big; the biggest one on the roof is like four square inches in area. I stopped the peeling though by removing the loose clearcoat with my fingernail and then brushing on a liberal coat of clearcoat touch up paint over the whole area focusing on the edge of the area to keep the peeling from spreading any larger.

It isn't pretty but has worked for the two years I've owned the truck now.

so here is the verdict. bring my truck to the dodge dealer of downers grove il. 5 star mind you and they wont even look at the truck and give me a guy that they send all there cars to and tell me to ask him, he would even know about any warranties. Now i dont know if they called this guy or not but he comes out and tells me i have a bad repaint. I am arguing with him like why does it look just like every other dakota with bad paint then why are all the symptoms the same. Anyway tells me he would have to strip it. 3500 bucks. Thats more than i paid for the truck. sanded it sprayed a bit of clear coat looks like sh!t but better than before. i guess i gotta deal with it.
