Subject: stopping power on a QC 4x4 IP: Logged
Message: I have a QC 4x4 4.7L with fiberglass shell and loaded tool box with the optional tires and skid plats. It's a fat@ss truck.
I've noticed that if it's wet outside after I drive and park the truck the brakes are very touchy and stop super quick. Example I drove to work in the rain last week, parked in the parking garage. When i went to leave to go home, I barely hit the break to slow down to take the turn leaving the parking garage and had the brakes lock up on me - I squeeled the tires. Then stopping at the parking lot exit to check for traffic on the road i barely hit the brakes again and the brakes locked up again - the ABS kicked in this time (I think because i was driving a little faster).
After what seemed like the brakes drying off, I had no issues on the drive home. I checked the fluid and it's full. Anyone had this happen before? I had a similar issue this weekend after the rain.
I am going to check out the front pads tonight when I get home.
If I need to replace the pads, any suggestions? I'm looking at the Raybestos SuperStop or Raybestos Quiet Stop Ceramic pads. I'm looking at these because they are both in stock at my local advance auto parts and i'd rather do it all at once instead of checking tonight and ordering pads and installing them tomorrow.

Message: Those are good pads. Be sure and check if the ceramic pads are recommended for towing. I could be wrong, but I think they are not. If they are not rated for towing, you don't to use them on your fat@ss truck :)
I also like Performance Friction carbon metallic, available at Autozone. Hawk truck pads I'm not impressed with.
Be sure to resurface the rotors - I use 120 grit snadpaper on a drill motor. And then carefully follow the bed in procedures that come with your new pads.

Message: Some pads are grabby when wet - if you know that, you can just brake a bit more lightly.

Message: Kowalski... i was breaking as lightly as i could when they locked up.
I actually talked to a guy at oreilly who suggested the warner heavy duty ones.

Message: I've seen this a lot on Fords, but maybe not as bad as what you are describing then. I recently saw an improvement going to aftermarket pads and rotors myself - you'll probably be happier with whatever you choose. My stock brakes weren't grabby like that, but were prone to fade like old drum brakes - seems like anything is better than what mopar gave us ! Good luck, sounds like it's time for a change...

Message: I'm thinking you braked long and hard at least once and transfered some pad material to your rotors due to overheating them. Take a real good look at them(can be very hard to see) . Reguardless what you see or don't see, clean the rotors up with some emery cloth or good sand paper (black kind). would be a smart idea to sand the pads a bit to be sure there not glazed.
So many problems .... So little time

Message: Same thing happened to me when I got my new brakes/rotors/
pads.
When it rains, check your rotors, sometimes, after sitting for a
little bit, there is a touch of rust on the rotors. It's usually gone
after a few stops.
After the car warms up the truck stops normally. (However I
consider how the truck stops when it is wet a good thing :)
My friend has a ranger, does the same thing. He has had 2
different rotors/pads and it still does it. It just has to due with
the moisture I think.
Funny thing is, when I break often, or when the brakes get hot
again, it grips extremely well, as if they were wet again. Usually
on al my other cars, as we know, the warmer they get the
mushier and lesser they perform, but not on mine I guess?
It could be a lot of things I guess.

Message: I didn't get a chance to look at the pads tonight as I almost bought a 2006 magnum for the wife tonight. If they can drop the payments another $20/month, say bye bye to a 2001 4 cylinder grand am with 55k miles and say hello to a 2006 3.5L Hi output magnum with 52 miles.

Message: Having the same truck I'll tell you half the problem is that there is NO ABS system on the front brakes! If my truck hits loose sand or water up front it will lock up until you let off. When I tow and don't have the trailer brakes set hi enough I get it real bad.
DC f--ked up when they only put ABS in the rear. And even that is not on the individual rear discs, itls on the diff so both wheels have to lock to get it to do anything!
Other than that, it stops quick on pavement having 4 descent sized disc brakes.
